I don't agree with the Pearl Jam thing either. I'm not a huge fan or anything. I just always thought of those guys as doing things their own way on their own terms. Nothing wrong with that in my book.

I don't like Pearl Jam but I do think they are very viable and still strong, doing their own thing. They are really boring to me but I won't knock them about how they've gotten to where they are now. Heck, they are headlining the Gorge here in the Northwest. If an artist can do that then they are still relevant (well, if they fill the place with 20,000).
And I don't agree with the Anthrax thing. I do think they've continued to make good music all these years - it's just that the mainstream hasn't noticed it. Volume 8 is a great album. I do, however, think they've struggled musically as a band with the absence of Dan Spitz's great lead solos during his time away. Anyway, time will tell what happens with the reunion. You can't say they failed on it - heck, they were on the Gigantour bill last year and are touring with Rob Zombie now.
I'm going to see Anthrax in a few weeks.VAN HALEN

I kinda agree with the Audioslave assessment.
I don't agree with what he says about KISS. They always have been about commercialism. They've been pretty up front since the beginning about wanting to make a lot of money, be popular and so on.
And by the way, he got it wrong too, about KISS and the farewell tour. They are NOT on the Farewell Tour still. That was a "farewell" to the original four members playing together, in 2000!
Regarding a new KISS album, Paul Stanley has been honest and said "what's the point of doing a new album now?" Since KISS has already got 30 years behind them, it wouldn't really break any new ground. As a fan of new music it sucks to hear this but at least he's honest and it's probably true. Look at the Psycho Circus debacle.VAN HALEN

Pearl Jam just sold out in Cleveland and a 2 night gig in Detroit at ARENAs. Whoever wrote this is retarded.
Lets just throw a pound of weed in the fire place, f@#% it!

VH had an 18 year stay at the top, during which they put out 10 studio albums.
Although the last 10 years have been frustrating, I don't feel that anything was pissed away.
They had a good run.Last edited by Menlow; 07.16.06 at 10:44 AM.

Guns N Roses is the only band on the list I could agree "Pissed it all away". Everyone else is either still rocking or had long careers. I also fricken LOVE Audio Slave!!! There about the only current rock band that I really like. But I listen to alot of different music these days.

seems to me that whoever wrote the article has a very specific (and in my humble opinion skewed, outlandish and fucking stupid) notion of what "pissing it all away" means.
I'll use Pearl Jam as an example. A good argument could be made that from the release of Vitalogy these guys have done everything in their power to alienate their mass audience, isolate themselves from the mainstream and squander the bewildering amount of revenue they were and could have continued to earn, had they just shut up and continued to give the people what they wanted...which is more Jeremy, more Alive, more Dissident etc.
They stopped making videos for every song. They stopped touring with Pace for a while. They started quietly releasing albums that had little of the "pearl jam sound" online instead of "sticking" with the formula etc.
I get that. But they were trying to reel in control of themselves. Right or wrong, better or worse, they did not want to be as big as they could have been, and were for a while. What they did was show a generation of aspiring artists how to own themselves.
I don't think they pissed anything away. Quite the contrary. I think they've hit exactly the kind of success they dreamed of having. They do what they want, when they want to and not a second before and without compromise...and they've done it without going back to playing bars and lugging their own gear.
I certainly don't think they've pissed anything away.

GnR is the hands-down winner. If their egos could have been put in check, I can't imagine what kind of music they would have been putting out today had they stayed together. A crying shame that Axl and Slash aren't able to do anything together. They possibly woulda-coulda-shoulda been the biggest band ever.
The VH thing is another matter. They had a successful career, and although we here as fans crave more and refuse to acknowledge the end of this band as we know them, I'm content w/what they've accomplished. They had great success with two different frontmen - nothing to be ashamed of, IMO.

I think GnR is unique in that I do believe we experienced the "woulda/coulda/shoulda" of this band. They had one phenomenal record. The next was pretty fucking good. The double album thing had some AMAZING moments, and that was pretty much. I think this band ran its course. They burned white hot for a brief moment and then burned out. Sometimes artistic talent, energy and inspiration are like that. No biggie. There was no single "heart and soul" of this group. Their greatness was a product of those specific players, the places they were in life at those specific moments and then when it all came out, it was done. That's in no way a knock against them. I fucking love a bunch of what they did but seriously, Axl is pretty talentless overall. Slash is a one-trick pony...it's a good trick but he is what he is. The rest were a collection of very talented role players that will continue to be very important within any projects they involve themselves in.
Look at this way: If the only things on YOUR head stone are some of the tracks on Appetite and Lies, November Rain, and Don't Cry, wouldn't you be pretty fucking pleased with yourselves?
Sometimes you don't have a billion November Rains in you. It's ok.
Yes, we can sit here and say, "WHAT IF they had kept writing such amazing music" but seriously...has anyone? Fuck, if we're going to do that, WHAT IF Beethoven had hooked up with Jimi Hendrix, EVH, John Bonham, the Beatles and Robert Moog? Then, they started a band and got Brian Wilson and Phil Spector to produce! Jeez...that would have rocked!!
We can "What If" anything in infinite ways...and sometimes it's fun, but don't get to hung up on them that you cease to appreciate the What IS and What WAS!
