A Couple Tunes
Thought I'd let you guys hear a couple early mixes of some songs my band is working on for a CD. No vocals yet, we just finished the music, and our drummer is a professional sound guy so he's mixing them on Pro Tools. He just sent me a couple of them just so I can make sure I don't have screw ups we need to fix before we do the vocals.
Obviously these aren't shredder tunes, they're just dumb rock songs, but they do have guitar solos. I can't give those up. My guitar's on the left, singer's on the right, leads are me.
Have a laugh!Webmaster

Great tunes, Brett!
Deaf & Blind sounds like The Scorpions meet Metallica. I love this song.
Left For Dead - interesting... ol' school panning of the rhythm and lead guitars in the mix, obviously the vox will fill in the gaps. The only problem is the drums: the entire sounds like it's in the centre of the whole mix. You might want to fix that because when the vox comes in, the drums are going to be lost completely.Homer: No one snuggles with Max Power. Just strap on and feel the Gs!
American Coast Guard: Back off Canadians we got them.
Canadian Coast Guard: You back off hosers, they are in Canadian waters, eh.
American Coast Guard: Beat it you puck smacking maple suckers!
Canadian Coast Guard: Take a hike you Shatner stealing Mexico touchers!
Bart: Who the hell is this?
Jack Bauer: I’m Jack Bauer, who the hell is this?
Bart: Me, er… I’m Ahmed Adudi
Jack: Chloe, get me all you can on Ahmed Adudi… Does anyone there know Ahmed Adudi?
Chloe O’Brien: Ahmed Adudi; wealthy Saudi financier… Disappeared into Afghanistan in the late 90s…
Jack: … Really?
Chloe (ironically): No Jack it’s a joke name, you’re being set up.
Jack: DAMMIT!

Thanks man, I think on Left For Dead, he was just trying to get the drums the way he wanted them sound-wise so he didn't re-pan them yet. I noticed they were in the middle too and they weren't before.

Just wondering, were the guitars mic'ed amps or Pod? The left and right tones are very similar. If they're Pod, which model was used?

HAHA I don't want to tell you.
Fuck ok I will.
Yes they were done on my Pod XT, so yes they are similar. But we were going for that, we didn't want two far different tones as we obviously do with our amps live. We wanted a tighter sound.
The left guitar (mine) is the "Criminal" Metal patch amp (it's a 5150), and I have the settings and cab set pretty much to my real settings.
The right guitar (singer's) is some metal patch amp, I think it's called "Deity" or something like that. His real amp is a Mesa Recto, so we tried to get something sorta close, and he didn't like the Mesa sounds of the Pod.
It was just much easier for us to use the Pod than our amps. We didn't want to rent more studio time, we spent a lot of cash to do the drums and have them sound perfect, and we wanted to be able to do the guitars at our drummer's house, since he has a great Pro Tools setup. And in a small apt., can't exactly mic 120 watt heads. Much more convenient to getting it all done cleaner and faster this way.
Our drummer said he might have to tweak them a little with EQ in the final mix, but he said they were pretty good as is, just need some ambiance.Webmaster

I'm listening to Deaf & Blind. I like it, and I like the slow phaser you've got going on. You had posted some "live" recorded versions of these before, right? I think I recognize them.

Yeah I think, these obviously sound a little better.
Yes there is an EVH Phase 90 on the verses and the first part of the solo on Deaf And Blind. The phaser is also on the intro to the other song.Webmaster

Cab is #19, 4 x 12's, Green 25's. Mic is a 67 Condenser, 60% room. I might have set the room to 0% when we recorded but I can't remember now. I think I just left it at 60.
I also am using the tube screamer stombox with Drive and Tone at 0% and Gain at 100%.Webmaster

Yeah we went to a real nice studio to do them, plus our drummer is pro sound guy who works on motion pictures, so I knew they'd come out nice. Once everything is all mixed it should pretty good, I'm pretty pleased.
We're doing vocals tomorrow for the 6 songs we recorded, so hopefully by the end of the week we'll have some pretty decent mixes.Webmaster

I would tend to agree, but the fact that he and Al still communicate says a great deal. Maybe that was Dave's grief. You know? Maybe. Dealing with things in past-tense. Never having really had...
