    Default Taping after Eddie

Ok, we have a tapping thread going. What I want to know is, what about TAPING? Anyone have the balls to tape up or stripe up their guitar after Eddie came on the scene? I'm talking about big name players, not us amateurs. I guarantee almost all of us who post in this forum at least tried our hand at striping a guitar. I got one right in front of me now that I did when I was 14. Black with yellow stripes spray painted on. Looks pretty cool, but the guitar is a serious piece of shit, totally unplayable now, so it's just a show piece.

I know Zakk has his bullseye guitar and Randy Roads had one done up with a design I forget now. What about other name players? Anyone see one of these guys with an Eddified axe? Much love to EVH, he's always been such an innovator. We miss you Ed!

I caught on old episode of SNL, and I forget the musical guest, but the guitarist was up there playing a VH 2 guitar. This had to be early to mid 80's. Can't remember the musical act for the life of me, but his guitar was the first thing I noticed.

I actually saw Rick James on Solid Gold back in 1981 and his guitarist had the VH II guitar. It was also the first thing I noticed.

It might have been Rick. At first glance I thought it was EVH sittin in with somebody. Then I realized it was just some guy up there with a striped guitar. Blatant rip off.

What was even more crappy, the guitarist would even dress like EVH, right down to the haircut.

Saddest of all that was when you actually heard the joker play. The guitar, outfit and haircut were the only things even remotely connected to EVH.

It truly was a painful thing to see.

Exactly. It was the same deal for me too. I remember doing a double take when I saw the guy. I think the reason this memory is so vivid in my head is because it was the night before an event I'll never forget: Being eleven years old and seeing VH for the first time in concert right in my hometown on the "Fair Warning" Tour.

Okay did some research. This appears to be Rick's SNL appearance in 1981 and the guitar player is once again using the VH II guitar. Enjoy!

That's pretty funny actually. That guitar player is a really really bad ripoff of Ed, right down to the clothes and haircut. I'm Rick James, bitch! That dude was one twisted fuck.

Geez, the guy even moves around like Edward. How sad.

Truly. One has to wonder what went into the decision making process (possibly cocaine?) that led someone to come up with the concept: "Hey, let's get a guy that looks, yet can not play, like this hot-shot Van Halen guy."

What's even odder, in 1981 Ed Van Halen was not what one would consider a household name, ya know? Popular amongst musicians, yet who else?

    Weird.

I have seen photos of Zakk Wylde playing a black-and-white striped guitar, but I can't remember if it was one of the newer Charvels or not. There was also a photo of Rivers Cuomo holding a 5150-style Kramer in a guitar magazine a few years back.

That would not surpise me, since the weezer logo is a homage (parody?) of the VH logo.
Don't drink the Jim Jones punch. They're called theToxic Twins for a reason...
