Ted Templeman decided to go with Dave after the split, (like the hole road crew did, except the guitar tec), cause he thought Dave would be more succesful than Ed and the gang.
Ed and Don were always very tight, and Ed always stated that 1984 was Don + Eds Babe, instead of Daves and Ted. I believe there were also some tensions between Ed and Ted, cause Ted was more like Dave. He was pushing for Coversongs which Ed hated, and for example was strictly against Iīll wait, which Ed loved, so....
Why they didnīt record 5150 with Don, i donīt know, maybe just to make it different with Sam aboard?

They canned Don as a producer, after OU812 came out, and the sound was not what they thought it should be. Ed always nicknamed that record as the Rock īnīRoll album, but does it sound like RnR?

On FUCK they reunited with both of them to get back to the old sound a little bit i guess, but i donīt really know that story, so maybe someone else can help me out there.

I was just looking on the Official Van Halen Site and apparently after 1984, Ted Templeman disappears from the production department and after OU812, Donn Landee no longer appears as the Engineer. It may not really matter to you, but I figured I never really knew. Whatever happened to those guys?

I believe they wanted to get Ted on board for 5150, but he was too tied up with Eat 'Em and Smile at the time.

Donn Landee was the engineer on all the albums up to OU812. Ed wasn't happy with the sound of OU812 and brought in Andy Johns to engineer for F.U.C.K. Mick Jones "produced" 5150 officially, but I have read an interview he did where he said he would stop by the studio occasionally to check in on the boys. He wasn't there everyday, so he would have been more of an executive producer. I don't see a producer listed on OU812, so I would assume Donn pretty much produced 5150 and OU812 with the band. It sounds like Donn was also at least co-producing 1984 ( whether Ted knew it or not ).

I think I read somewhere that the band wasn't happy with the low end on the albums, especially OU812, and Donn wasn't willing to change his production style. Who knows, maybe Ed just felt it was time to work with someone else. Andy Johns did a great job on F.U.C.K., in my opinion.

I think when they had Ted On F.U.C.K,It was the closest the band got to their old "Brown Sound" with Sammy and they shouldve kept him for BALANCE and VAN HALEN 3.Not saying that BALANCE was a bad album, its my favorite, though Having Ted wouldve made it a lot harder than having Bruce "Aerosmith/Bon Jovi" Fairbran.
Rest in Peace, Ed.

And BALANCE had some harder sounding stuff than the other Hagar albums did. I would have loved to have seen the whole album consist of that instead of the fillers that it had. Ted surely would not have allowed that...

BUt, it's all in the past. Here's to wishful thinking...
