Hagar is still on top of the rock REVIEW

    By ALAN K. STOUT
    Weekender Editor

SCRANTON – Sammy Hagar, one of the true good guys in the world of rock, still loves to sing. After more than 35 years in the music business and two stints with the once mighty Van Halen, he also still loves to play guitar. And he still loves to party.

Hagar did all three Sunday night at the Toyota Pavilion at Montage Mountain before a crowd of 5,000, splitting his show with his solo hits and Van Halen favorites.

The ageless “Red Rocker” opened the show with “Mas Tequila” and later followed with “There’s Only One Way To Rock” and a fun cover of Bob Dylan’s “Rainy Day Women.”

He also quickly displayed his wit.

“I remember this place now,” he said, a few songs into the set. “We were here a few years ago with that silly son of a bitch.”

The reference to his 2002 tour with David Lee Roth was met with a laugh and a cheer.

Hagar, unlike Roth, remains a very likable entertainer. He seems to love the glare of the spotlight, and there is a genuine appreciation for his audience. He brings fans to the stage, he hands out drinks, he calls out for requests and he even signs autographs mid-song. This, combined with his fun persona and charisma, and his terrific rock voice, makes him an excellent frontman.

Other well-played and well-received hits from his solo career included “Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy,” an extended, jammy rendition of “Little White Lie,” “I Can’t Drive 55” and “Heavy Metal.”

The second part of the show celebrated Hagar’s time with Van Halen. It began with a clever solo by Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony and was followed with a performance of the Roth-era “Running With The Devil” with Anthony on lead vocals. Other VH favorites included “Standing On Top of The World,” “Why Can’t This Be Love,” “Runaround” and “Best of Both Worlds.” There was also an energetic and surprising cover of the Beastie Boys’ “Fight For Your Right To Party.”

Ironically, the “other half,” as Hagar and Anthony bill themselves, appear to be the last men standing in the mess now known as Van Halen. Roth has become an almost mockish, cartoon-like caricature of himself, guitar legend Eddie Van Halen is reportedly a now very cranky musician who is impossible to work with, and drummer Alex Van Halen is also off of rock’s radar. The band has not released a full-length album of all new material in eight years.

Hagar and Anthony, however, still rock on. And they do it well, and they do it with a smile.

Who says the good guys don’t sometimes win?
