Default Big Trouble 1982, Angel Eyes 1979

it is stated that van halen re-recorded angel eyes for inclusion in VHII but it didnt happen and also they went back and re-recorded older songs from the 77 period demo for inclusion on diver down but then came daves lame cover song idea.
the only song mentioned that they re-recorded and were considering putting on diver down was Big Trouble.

anything out there? im assuming not but does anyone have further information on this? thank you.

Dave is to blame for the cover songs ??? I always thought this was Eddies idea because they were partying to much and the record company wanted another album but nothing was written.

Dave's idea was "Dancing in the Street." Eddie's ideas were "Pretty Woman" and I think "Big Bad Bill." (not sure about that one). "WHALGTG" was a band idea, I believe.

"Big Trouble" would have been a great addition to that album. I would rather have had that then "Dancing in the Street".

Eddie has confirmed that Big Trouble & House of Pain were recorded for DD, but left off for whatever reason.
Angel Eyes was considered for VHII but it is not known if it was actually recorded or not.

For the record Eddie never mentioned to do any covers for Diver Down. Big Bad Bill was Roth's idea after hearing it on some AM station in Kentucky. Somehow he picked up the signal from his home.

Pretty Woman was only commented by Eddie as having a riff that smokes. He liked that one much more then Dancing in the Streets. He got pissed at Dave and Ted because they wanted to use the mini moog riff he had for an original song.

"Big Bad Bill" was another Diamond Dave's idea. He was listening to this radio station and he listened to this track and showed that to Edward and the other band mates - he said something like: "That's bad. Let's do it!". Edward asked who would play the clarinet and Dave said they would ask their old man to do that.

I love how in some people's perceptions Dave and Sam each had such control over the band that poor little Eddie has no choice but put songs on albums that he didn't like, play songs live that he didn't want to, etc. Blaming Dave for the song selection on Diver Down makes a much sense as blaming Sammy for ticket prices. As Ed likes to say, he is driving the car and he decides who gets to ride in it.

I remember that "Secrets" was a leftover from the "Fair Warning" recording session and when the band/WB decided to make the EP idea into a whole new record, they included this track previously know as "Lookin' Good". Another song they re-recorded was "Last Night" - as you know, it became "Hang'em High", with different lyrics, btw.

Sorry if my post made you think I was blaming Diamond Dave. That wasn't the intention. I love Diamond Dave and I just tried to mention that he always had that nice humour. Diver Down is a great record: part for the great songs, covers or original ones there; part for the great musicians playing there; part for the sense of humour the band had back to those days; part for being one of the 6-pack Classic Van Halen records.
