The thing about electric cars is that they may save you money on gas but they don't conserve any energy. They just move the fuel consumption from the gas pump to the power-plant. That electriciy doen't appear by magic, it's generated at a power-plant that uses oil, coal, natural gas or nuclear. Two of those pollute. Picture your daily commute with all electric cars and then tell me what kind of drain on the power grid would occur at 6:00pm every night when people get home and plug in.

Then you have those gaint batteries full of acid, then think about how many car wreck you saw last week, then last month and then all of last year and then understand that even a minor fender-bender would be a serious chemical spill that would have to be covered by insurance, which would tripple in some states.

Electric cars are an interesting idea and are useful in limited situations (golf carts, campus transport, factory shuttle) but they were never a realistic replacement for the cars we drive today.

What people should be talking about is why big oil is blocking our use of flex-fuel cars. They've gone to all flex-fuel in Brazil, which no longer imports oil and it's a huge success. More importantly, most of the cars Brazillians drive are American cars, specially designed for flex-fuel use. A move to flex-fuel would solve the gas question AND rescue the American auto industry.

Yet nobody in Washington cares because nobody's writing and calling them to get off their ass and move on flex-fuel. The only people they hear from is big-oil, and those guys always bring their checkbooks.
