Is Michigan really this bad??
Any opinions?? Any other Michiganders out there?? I think this is a wonderful State, and I can't believe that some who lives here could believe that Michaganders are "rude assholes even more so than New Yorkers". I know the weather can be tough, but damn, this is a wonderful place to live...and if it isn't your cup o' tea...why not just move??

You're very, very confused about Michigan being a "great" state, but other than that, I agree with you.
This place is only "great" for about 3 months of the year, and tolerable for about another 3. December is cute, but after that, Jan-May absolutely SUCK. As do the people, their driving, the economy (the only state in America with a job economy that is plummeting), and the attitudes. Michiganders are rude a**holes, even moreso than New Yorkers. This place is wretched, unless you live in Rochester, Farmington, Grand Blanc, Novi, Birmingham, etc.
And even if you live in those nice areas, it's just well-mannered people living in horrid weather. Unless of course, you're fat, in which case, 75 degrees is probably your definition of "steamy". To me, it's a cold-front. This summer's weather has been unacceptable. Unless staying at home and tickling your Playstation while not getting laid is your defintion of "fun".
75% of Michiganders drive "up north" every weekend in the summer because.......get this.......their hometown city SUCKS. And we wonder why gas prices go up 25 cents on Thursday night.
Half the people who worship the University of Michigan are Dale Earnhardt loving hicks who can't spell the word "Michigan", yet Michigan State's only fans are actual COLLEGE GRADUATES. Imagine that. This place is screwed-up beyond belief.
When Detroit has a mayor who doesn't have a stripper who died at his tax-payer funded mansion, I'll bat an eyelash.

Although you called me a "faggot" (again, I believe that to be the French term for "Black Belt at Age 12") in the original "Detroit Tigers" thread that generated this one, I'll reply to you:
Yes. It's that bad. But why start a thread about it? Got hang-ups? I thought my post was rather humorous.
BTW, you're starting to scare me. I know Michigan hasn't won a Rose Bowl since Lloyd Carr almost gave one away to that one-man team known as Ryan Leaf, but yeesh, if you ARE standing outside my house, I need to let you know that Vince Young doesn't live in this house!
There's no reason to hit it with your paintball gun!
Seriously.......I just powerwashed it!!!

I've been to Detroit a couple times & must say that the best thing I found there was a plane flight back to Charlotte. A year in Michigan's weather was described to me as being 9 months of winter w/ 3 months of bad skiing. That being said, I have several great friends who live there.

Well, I live in the southside of Royal Oak, right off 10 Mile and this neighborhood is starting to go down the drain. There isn't enough money or people in the district to keep all the schools open, hence, I have to go to a school I absolutely hate for my senior year. I do like this place though, there is a lot of diversity but also the area I live in is SO racially divided. And you can tell, it's not something I like to see, but north of 10 Mile is mostly Caucasian but south of 10 Mile of mostly African American.
People here can go either way as far as rude or being nice goes. My only real experience would be the high school I went to. Dondero High School was like a second home. Everyone there was nice, there were no cliques, not everybody was friends but everyone knew everyone else. We only had 600 in our 70 year old high school, but it was a family. Teachers were not only teachers but also your best friends. At my school, I knew of nothing but kindness.
I love downtown Royal Oak a lot. Even though the only things to do down there are eat, shop, eat, eat, eat and go to Barnes & Noble, I still love it. It's four blocks of big city life in a medium sized town. The lofts going up are insane, they are selling out and they're everywhere!
But once the real world hits, I guess I'll be seeing a new Michigan economically speaking. I know of the job situation, and hope this economy will pick up. Things are starting to look up but who knows what can happen from there?Last edited by The J Man; 06.30.06 at 09:16 PM.

I grew up and lived in upstate NY for 22 years. I moved to the South in 1992. I can honestly say that it was a huge adjustement and in some cases it still is ... however ... in general I find people in the Midwest, North and North East very uptight with just about everything. I used to be. My realtives still are, God love them. I think the weather does it to you up there. I never would have believed it unless I hadn't moved away. Now I can see it. Michigan is beautiful and the folks are nice. I just think Northerners in general are uptight about too much and stress out about way too much. I know ... I used to be that way! Climate has a huge impact on ones psyche and overall state of mind and happiness.
Before anyone from the North decides to get uptight about this post, take a moment to chill out and relax. It's not that big of a deal. Granted, there are just as many things or more you could say about the South. As usual, there is a great woman behind every idiot.

There are assholes everywhere. There are nice people everywhere. I like it here in Michigan. My family is here. Winters do suck for the most part, but if you like any winter sports, this is the place to be. Skiing, sledding, snowmobiling, ice fishing, etc. You can do it here in the winter.
We don't go "up north" because our hometowns suck. We go up north to get away from the daily grind. Our hometowns are generally wonderful places to raise a family. Nice place to live, but you wouldn't want to visit there. My neighborhood is not a tourist attraction, and thank God. What's wrong with that? It certainly doesn't suck.

I agree that Detroit itself is pretty much a rathole, and the politicians of that city are corrupt, but you of all people, by living here, should know we have some of the nicest suburbs in the world, Oakland county is one of the richest counties around. The lakes areas of Oakland and Livingston counties are absolutely beautiful, and this state holds many other treasures that you should be well aware of. Yes our economy is in a downturn, however, were you applauding it when UAW workers were taking home 10k profit sharing checks just a short time ago?? The economy in MI will turn back around, it is the natural ebb and flow of the auto industry. Yes we all know that winters can be tough here, but the truth is, the rest of us are tough enough to deal with them and we get sick of whiny little pussies like yourself crying about it. Guess what mr tough guy black belt, put on an extra layer of clothing, suck it up, be a man, use that tough guy black belt you keep spewing about and get out and try to enjoy a winter sport like the rest of us.....you whiny, sniveling little bitch!! Other than that, keep your stupid mouth shut about the people of this area, who I find to be some of the finest people around, however, like you stated, there are some rude assholes that reside here, consider yourself amongst them.Last edited by againstthewind; 07.01.06 at 06:51 AM.

Detroit looks like Berlin after World War II.
Other than that, the only part of Michigan I've seen is New Buffalo. And I thought it was pretty cool.CHICAGO WHITE SOX - 2005 WORLD CHAMPIONS
The Chicago White Sox (1901-present) - The Original SOX - Proof
The Boston Americans (1901)
The Boston Somersets (1902)
The Boston Pilgrims (1903-1906)
The Boston Red Sox (1907-present) - Proof
The Pilgrims/Americans/Somersets whatever you want to call them, have NEVER displayed "SOX" anywhere on their caps, jerseys, or merchandise, therefore they shouldn't be referred to as such. However, the White Sox have used "SOX" since 1912.
The SOX are in Chicago...we just allow the Pilgrims/Americans/Somersets to use the name.

I lived in Northern Michigan for a little over a year, and found the people up there (Yoopers!) to be very nice. I've never been to the Lower Peninsula, especially the Detroit area so I can't say anything about it other than what I've heard, and I've heard it sucks. My brother and my Niece's Dad were there in '91 and they said Detroit was a shithole.
I've lived in 11 states and the state with the rudest people in my humble opinion is my home state of Minnesota. The people there are generally not very friendly.
The friendliest state? Nebraska. We moved to Central Nebraska in the summer of '76, and the town we moved to had a cookout to welcome the new people in town, and it seemed like we fit in right from the get go. Just great, great people."Viking - last to sleep, first to rise, last to leave, that's how the Nords of old rocked the house." ~ timmac in the 'Texas Linkers' thread talking about yours truly. :-)

atw- No more of these please. It's pretty obvious what your intent was. Not cool. So what if the dude thinks Michigan sucks. Ya know what? He can, and that's ok.
I hate bleeding hostilities in to other threads, let alone starting new ones for the soul purpose of exclamation.
