Default Ed Singing Lead - How Much Interest...

Would any of you have in a record that was Ed, Al, and bass by committee, or Mike Anthony for that matter. Then on lead vocals and writing lyrics, Ed himself. Now, I'm pretty sure his throat is torn up enough that he couldn't tour or perhaps even get through an album, but, for the purposes of discussion, let's assume he can do a record. Would any of you care to hear a real "Van HALEN" album rather than a Van Hagar, Van Roth, Van Whoever album?

so are Eric Clapton, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan. Billy Joel and Elton John are piano players. Paul McCartney plays piano, bass, guitar and drums. John Lennon and Paul McCartney were both multi-instrumentalists as well. George obviously was most recognized as a guitar player. I'm sure we can all come up with pretty long lists of guitar players and other instrumentalists that sing their own songs...this isn't the 1940's anymore...

If Ed's there, I'm buying, but I always wanted to hear them as a trio with Mikey singing lead...

How many say I....Do I need to say more. The dude can tear up a guitar like no other. Unfortunatly he can also sing...Like no other.
The difference between Ed and Clapton, McCartney, Nelson, Joel, E.John, they can sing.

again people have said the same thing about dylan and springsteen for years. Anyone remember the "making of" We Are the World thing waybackwhen? They were trying to get Springsteen to "sing" and when they realized he was practically tone deaf, they reworked the part so he could just "springsteen" it. OH, and jesus, are you going to tell me the guy from AC/DC can "sing?"

Springsteen and Dylan are both songwriters/poets. Love 'em or hate 'em, their lyrics tell a story. Comparing that to Eddie singing is different. It's a different style of music

I'm pretty familiar with everyody you listed. That's just not ed's game man. He's a guitar player, period. I don't care what year it is. Half of his tounge is gone, his voice sucks and his concentration is better focused on what's left of his ability to play the guitar. You asked my opinion, I'm giving it. Don't try to win me over or anything. It won't happen.

why, because the guitar solos are "better" or more "compex?" I could be completely off, but I think the work Ed did on parts of FUCK, Balance and VHIII as well as bits throughout his career hint at a depth and a desire to compose and create songs beyond the bombastic pyrotechnic music we've come to expect from VH. We've never heard Eddie Van Halen lyrics, and based on what he's said about the lyrics his singers have written, perhaps he has an idea of what he wants. I don't think he'd write a folk record, (well, I suppose anything is possible with these guys) but I'd certainly be really interested in hearing what he would create if it was all about him, no compromises, no excuses, just him being able to do exactly what he wanted...

i'm not trying to win anyone over...just throwing something out there...and your opinion is really valid. I personally don't think he has it in him to be a singer. I think realistically, if he had the emotional and creative desire to do so he'd have done it a long time ago...like decades ago...but I don't think he's wired that way. And now, well...like you said, the guy has half a tongue, a 6packaday voice and probably more than a little aloof.

To be true, I don't think any of us would have heard of EVH had it not been for people like David Lee Roth...the guy has always struck me as hopelessly shy...I'm sure we've all known people like this...guys that are really brilliant and cool but for whatever reason they can't stand being around people and they need to get loaded just so they don't pass out from social anxieties...that's just my take.
