Default Hagar and Roth Have the Same Problem Most VH Fans Have

They keep wanting to make time stand still...They want Ed to never have changed or matured or gotten bored and just have it be "the good old days." And, where as that may in fact be a normal impulse for anybody, the resentment they and many fans hold toward Edward is unfounded, illogical, unhealthy and counter-productive. It sounds to me that Sammy has exactly what he wants. He gets to tour every year because that's what he does. He gets to perform VH tunes sell his tequilla and be a successful businessman/singer. Dave gets to keep being Dave...in all his well...in all his ways and forms. Seems to me the only thing they lack is the MASS COMMERCIAL GAINS that would be had if instead of some anonymous EVH clone playing guitar, they had the real deal. Well, forgive Ed for not being into that and forgive me for respecting him for it. If he never releases another note of music, I'm completely fine with that. What I'm not fine with is him becoming Kiss or some other nostalgia act. Hagar, Roth and the rest of the world that can't seem to let it go, all need to try a little harder.

    Default yep...

For the most part I agree with you.. But i would like to see Ed sober up and put some new stuff out there.. I get depressed when I think about the songs "Humans Being" "Me Wise Magic" and "Cant Get This Stuff No More".. VH was headed into such a bad ass direction and the sound would have worked with either singer... then they came out with the stuff on BOBW and they sound like a bunch of songs that didnt make it onto the F.U.C.K. album.. oh well, lets just hope.

Could it not be possible that they miss when there was a creative edge like no other? Dave especially. Look at the six pack compared to his solo work. Edwards music is brilliant and you will not be able to write music like that with anyone else. Or how about the magic of a VH concert? Sammy and Mikey might be having a good time compared to the 2004 tour but as anyone can attest, it's not a VH concert. They too can miss it just like we do.

You have some good points there.

I do wish that VH could have one of the two (or both) in the studio and just write some songs TOGETHER. I'm sure that would get the creative juices flowing again.

Exactly how has Eddie Van Halen "Matured"???? to praise him for "not being into" the MASS COMMERCIAL GAINS is ludicrious...his band has released two greatest hits collections in the past 10 years with only one album of actual new material & took part in a complete cash cow/nostalgia tour just two years ago...I, like you, am fine if he doesn't want to release another note of music - but then he needs to shut up about having "10 albums worth of material"...he is primarily responsible for destroying one of the greatest rock 'n roll bands of all time...I'm tired of hearing people being apologists for him...

i'm not apologizing for him, I'm just not going to crucify for him not putting on a smile and recording 1984 and 5150 over and over and over again. And as for the cash cow/nostalgia tour just two years ago, I was up in arms because I thought it was a crappy idea and from what I can tell by reading these boards he was completely disengaged from the process...as for the greatest hits albums, labels pretty much determine when those things happen. He tried to make some new music on it with Sammy, the music sucked. It seems to me that the half-heartedness and unfulfillment of the that quasi-album as well as the attempt at reuniting with Sammy and the tour probably did a great deal to reassure Ed and Alex that they have no interest in doing things on other people's terms. I got no problem with that. I'd respect him a tad more if he had not gotten involved with the 04 deal but hey, when everybody in the free world is on your case to do something, even the most staunch and stubborn of us will eventually do it...even if we don't have our hearts in it.

i dont see how performing every year makes you a nostalgia act. you're right, if Ed doesnt want to tour and write new music to release, that's his choice. but that choice has no more artistic integrity than Hagar's choice to release a new CD every couple years and do shows. Maybe Ed can live by not doing anything but enjoying his wealth and performnig once in a blue moon. Sammy in contrast wants to go out and perform. It comes down to what they "do" for a living. Personally if i were wealthy I would still "do" something with my time. And if I had been a musician, I would probably still go out and tour if I still liked doing it. That doesnt mean I'm a nostalgia act.

Hell, as bad as I thought DLR's Leno performance was, even he felt the need to do something new and make himself useful with this Southern Side of VH CD he made.

well said. sam is the one who felt the ticket prices were outrageous and that caused contention with Eddie. Eddie of all people certainly doesnt have the moral ground to stand on with regard to putting on nostalgia shows.

hey, at least sam and dave put out new records (even if they are atrocious, though i like sam's) and sam is digging into his own pocket to offset tour costs on his tour this summer and keep ticket prices low.

Steve...come on now. $am signed that big fat contract for the 2004 tour without worrying about ticket prices. And ticket prices was not the problem between $am and Ed. AS far as his current tour, he has to have low ticket prices to get people there. And the more people he has there, the more he can pimp his tequila.

when I say "nostalgia act" I'm not talking about someone who simply tours every year or who continues to release albums. In my eyes, you become a nostalgia act when you stop moving forward with your craft and simply begin "imitating yourself" so to speak. That's what I was afriad the '04 tour was signaling the begining of. Thankfully, it hasn't come to pass. To me it's not a matter of money or a man's perogative to turn a profit. It's simply a matter of what does someone want to do with their time. If Sammy wants to release basically the same record over and over again and tour all the time, GOD BLESS HIM! It ain't my cup of tea. It really isn't but it certainly IS for a lot of people. I wish him well. Same with Dave. Dave's like that damn bunny, he just keeps going and going. I never really know where he's going but I'm never ever suprised or shocked when he arrives. But if Ed doesn't want to do that sort of thing, well...fine for him to. He's ALREADY done all of that. So if he finds himself in a connundrum where what people want him to do is the antithesis of what he wants to do and what he wants to do will not be welcomed, and he chooses to simply sit on his hands, well...who are we to get all up in his shit? Pardon the phrase. If you want to see him tour with Sammy and it be really cool and whatever else, pop in the DVD of them from F.U.C.K. Seems pretty simple to me.

no one is saying Sam isnt a business man who wants to make money. the question is whether EVH has some kind of moral high ground on this issue, which i think is a resounding no.

yeah i hear you but i dont think there is anything wrong with us fans wishing for this or that. sure EVH can do what he wants to do but there's nothing wrong with fans debating or discussing it.

as for sam, well i think the guy changes his music style with each record since VH so i certainly couldn't call it doing the same thing. if by playing guitar and singing songs you mean "same thing" then i guess that qualifies.

even DLR isn't doing the "same" thing with this bluegrass VH record haha.
