Eddie's ultra high notes 2004 tour technique
Hi, I've been watching some of the video from the 2004 tour and I noticed EVH is doing a lot of super high notes in his fills. I'm trying to figure out how he's doing it. I assume it is some sort of octave pedal, but from what I've seen he doesn't seem to be stepping on any pedals before or after he uses it. I don't know if there is a control mounted on the guitar or what, but he seemed to be going from normal to one or more octaves up pretty seamlessly. I've never really heard him do it before the 2004 tour and I don't know if I've ever heard anyone else do anything quite like it. Anyway if anyone has any input into how he's doing it it would be appreciated. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure it's the sustainer pick-up he's been messing with...its pretty evident on the recording of 'Learning to See'....certainly a subject of controversy in regards to Eds sound....alot of people said he over used it on the 2004 tour.
I'm sure someone here will fill you in with more details...I'm curious to know too.

its the the fernandez sustainer/neck pickup with the harmonic overtone switch on.
he used it sometimes on the Balance tour as well , a purple ebmm used during his solo.
he also used it on the III tour , for his "year to the day/guitar solo".
eddies been using it since they recorded "me wise magic" in 1996 it can be heard on the twister soundtrack song "respect the wind" also from 1996.Last edited by Rick S; 06.18.06 at 10:06 PM.

Like others have said, it's the Fernandes Sustainer - look in the neck pickup spot for something that looks like a single coil.
I know you didn't ask this, but he did use a Peavey digital effect processor for an octave effect on the 2004 tour, but it was octave-down. He used it on parts of Runaround and during his solo sometimes.
