The Flow of 'Best Of Both Worlds' CD
Believe it or not, I actually just bought this CD yesterday! I guess because I have so many self-made 'best of's' I never felt the need to pick this baby up. Well, I gotta say, I thought I would love the songs bouncing back and forth between DLR and Sammy VH but I don't at all!!
I've alway's viewed this band as 2 completely different bands using the same name. I'm either in a 78-84 VH mood or I'm in a Sammy VH mood. It's really bizarre. I love both era's and I wouldn't trade back the Sammy years, but suprisingly I just can't get into both era's being mixed on a CD. Now that I think of it, even my burnt CD's are always split up that way too. I guess I never realized I was doing that! So with BOBW, I'll hear something like Ain't Talkin Bout Love and be all fired up for more old school VH but it goes into Finish What You Started. Nope. Doesn't work for. I love FWYS, but it needs to be sandwhiched around Sammy VH. And vice versa. Black and Blue into Jump didn't work for me...I skipped to Top Of The World.
Anybody else wish BOBW was split in half? CD1 all Dave, CD2 all Sammy?
Sorry if this is an old topic. I did a search and didn't see any discussion about it..
.
.
VH with Dave ('78-'84) - The best years....the "real" VH.
VH with Sam ('86-'96) - Incredible era....."We have renamed this town 'New Halen!'.
VH with Gary ('98) - Fucking disaster. WTF was that??
VH with Wolf/Dave ('12-'15) - Amazing comeback. Smokin' album and tours.

I agree with what your saying. It's awkward hearing Dave era and than goin' into Sam era. having one era per Cd would be a lot better. Just my opinion

Since I don't listen all the way through in that manner it doesn't bother me... But you know what does?
1.Finish What Ya Started doesn't sound complete somehow.
2.The 3 live songs. I think they're should have been 4 live songs. 2 with Sammy and 2 with Dave.
3.Where is Mean Streets? It's one of the best best sounds and Not Enough is on there, but Mean Streets isn't?

Didn't like the flow either. Definitely shoulda been disc1 78-84 plus MWM and CGTSNM, disc2 85-95 plus HB, add a third disc for live cuts, and leave out the 3 new Sammy tunes and put 'em on a new, complete album...IMO

surprisingly, I did not bother me as much as I thought it would. When I bought the CD and read the song list I thought the same thing....."They mixed up the eras!....Terrible!"......but I have found that me bieng a big fan of both eras that I can quickly get in to any song that comes next....just a few seconds of just about any VH song doesn't take me long to find it's groove.....and on a few songs like Jump going onto Top of the World....is intentional because it's the same guitar riff going out of Jump into TOTW.
as with any "Best Of" album there are going to omissions.....can't please everyone.....you can always make your own "BestOf"......as I'm sure all of us have

I agree it should have been 2 seperate cds. I prefer the Dave era stuff but the Sammy stuff is not at all. I actually liked the new songs. They purposely put all Sammy live songs on the disc to shove it up Roths ass.
Royalty's...
I wish it was 2 discs.
What would be even better would be for the band to sell the cds seperately. just to show Eddie how much people love the Dave Era stuff...

They should've just stuck to what they did on BOVI. It doesn't work at all the way it is on BOBW.

I would have preferred 1 CD of Roth and 1 CD of Hagar.
Although, it is neat to hear them all jumbled up sometimes.Remember the Heroes - 9/11/01
