Who wrote the BEST melodies-Dave or Sammy?

I know this will be moved to another forum, but
as a main discussion, who was the BEST VH frontman to compliment Eddie's unique song writing style throughout the years, with their
own unique brand of melody writing?

Dave or Sam ?

Actually I'd say Sammy won the melody prize, but Dave definately had the better lyrics. Although some of Sammy's lryics were pretty good.

I'd say Dave wins the melody war as well. Nothing Sam did comes CLOSE to Outta Love Again...NO_THING. Same for the vocal melodies/harmonies on I'm the One, Panama, and Light Up the Sky-(ee).

Although, from everything that Eddie or Dave or Sammy ever said (and their explanations surprisingly DO match up when they talk about the music) the melodies and harmonies were worked on together much of the time.

I'd imagine that the main choruses (ex: "Panama!") were written along with the guitar parts...maybe, and then Dave came up with the other melodies (ex: you lose it in the tur-urn...I'll get her(rolls up an octave)!"

A lot of the time, a melody is going to sound better with different lyrics that have different vowel sounds and different number of syllables, etc, so it's easy to say that Dave and Sammy did have a big part in writing the melodies and harmonies.

nobody squeezes words around eddie's riffs better than dave.
however, being that dave was unwilling to grow and change for the 5150 material, i have to say sammy did an awesome job there. sammy is definitely more melodic.

dave is a shrieker, sammy's a singer.

i wonder if sammy could have handled the earlier vh stuff...

....I agree..Dave get's in the nooks & crannies..... he sings in between " the music...Sam's throat is so powerful , he's on top of the music....that's why both worked so well..& really are different

VAN HALEN=ed,al,mike,dave
VAN HAGAR=ed,al,mike,sammy
EX-HALEN=ed,al,mike, & the "more than words" guy

Dave IS the best that ever was. He brought out the best in Eddie and vice versa. The "other" two versions are just so pale it makes me sad they still used the name VAN HALEN.

Dave had the best melodies/vox/lyrics/presence/stories and will ALWAYS be the fuckin' man!! [img]graemlins/thumb.gif[/img]
