Guitar Stands: Friend Or Foe?
I have one of those Triple Guitar stands... tubular thing, suspends guitars by the neck.
Anyway, I was talking to a fellow guitar player and he says he never uses stands that "hang" guitars by the neck.. he says stress fractures could develop on the body near wher the neck is bolted on.
Anyone else hear this?...Sings like a bird. Rocks like a pig.

that makes sense, considering the mass and weight of the body in comarison to the small points that hold the guitar up. Thats just my opinion though and I might be mistaken.

Ive got 2 stands like that and I havent had any problem with them. If anything, they help keep the guitar still while its in the stand instead of leaning to one side. Wall hangars are pretty cool too

I've always looked at the guitar like one would admire a fine woman or sports car so I've always had mine on stands or wall hangers as "artwork". But recently, I've gone back to keeping my Wolfies in their cases, I was having to clean them constantly and it just got to be too much !
Never had any neck problems with mine, fractures or warping !Lode's Facebook

i've always kept my ibanez and acoustic guitar on stands. Then after I wacked the neck into the doorway as I was walking into another room, the thing wouldn't tune again. Long story short, I brought the guitar into the local tech to give it "tune up." He suggested, and especially becuase I live in new england where the temps and humidity is always changing, to keep the guitars in a case. So he says too, however after 10 years of mostly keeping them on stands I haven't seen too much of a difference. I do however keep my wolfgang in its case when not in use.

If that was true, then I guess all guitars that hang for months/years at a time in music stores would develop stress fractures. I use the small stands that the guitars body just leans on it and nothing touches the neck, like Eddie has for his Wolfgangs on the inside cover of Best Of...Volume I

I've often wondered about leaving guitars on traditional style stands for long periods of time. I've got 4 that are setting on stands, some of which up to a for a long time. (year or 2) Maybe I ought to put them back in there case for a while?. It's just so handy leaving them out.

I lean my guitars against the wall.
Sometimes they fall down.
I let the kids play with them.
I let the babies drool on them.
They are wood, steel, and magnets........they will survive.
They like kids.
They play and sound better with baby drool on them.

Sorry for that last post............I was a bit drunk when I was posting.
Stand or case??
I would go with case for purely preservation purposes.
But I prefer to leave them out. I don't think leaving them on a stand for extended periods does them any harm, as long as you pick them up and give them a little love now and then. It does make them more likely to get dirty though.......and don't leave them too near to a kitchen where there could be a lot of grease vapors in the air. You need a solvent to get that crap off.
As I say, I keep mine usually just leaning against a wall....but that's only because I never did get around to buying any stands. And the finish on mine is just spray paint.
