I was just thinking of how the first time i heard it i thought the guy playing it played just like Eddie and it sounds just like him, a few years later i found out it was actually him,...duh! He has a style that is easy to recognize. Just wondered what you all thought the first time you heard it, did you know it was Eddie?

To be honest, I don't really remember. I've probably only heard the solo a handful of times because I've never liked Michael Jackson at all. Oddly enough though, I burned a bootleg yesterday and had some extra space so I threw Beat It on there (har
) and listened to it for the first time in many years. It's a cool solo, but the sound is very thin; it didn't scream out of there like I thought it would. I guess that's just a product of it's age.

Shit the first time I ever heard it was when Thriller first came out (circa 1982)
Sadly that was BEFORE I got into VH. I'm embaressed to admit it, but I think I got the album Thriller for a birthday present that year...(Hey I was only 9 years old then)
Anyway, at the time I didn't know it was Eddie Van Halen in the solo, cause at the time (1982) I wasn't yet into Van Halen.
Thank God a few years later (1985) I saw the light of VH! I have been a VH Fanatic ever since!

What I can vaugeley remember from it since I was like 12 or 13 was watching the video on mtv and thinking "this is a tough video"
then a couple of years later I started to listen to VH and was really into them and was reading a guitar world magazine that mentioned that Ed did that solo.
That was a shock to say the least.

I immediately checked the Record Sleeve & said Holy Shit It is Eddie!
yes I said Record sleeve. they were those flat black things that had music on them before cds. I think that they took cassettes & pulled all the tape out then melted it all together & smashed it flat.

I thought it was great. It is Ed but I don't think he used his amp because it didn't really have the Ed sound which I think is why some people weren't sure. It could have also been the studio. I love it!

Well i was never a Michael Jackson fan either but how could you not hear that song more than a shitload of times back in 1983? The "gloved one" was everywhere back then. Atleast he's not now

Good point there GGB, now that I think about it, it doesn't sound like his amp at all. I just visualized him walking into the studio with his guitar(frankenstein) and doing a take or so for MJ.

I thought, gee that guitar sounds familiar. I can always pick out Edward, but I couldn't believe that he would work with Michael Jackson. It did make the song a lot cooler, though.

I thought and still do that the BeatIt solo is one of Edwards best. I love it. Very dry sound. The effects are in his fingers.

30 seconds of greatness surrounded by 5 minutes of crap.
BTW, if anyone wants the solo without having to endure Michael Jackson, I have it. Look for me on Napster

You have to at least give him credit that he is making the attempt, something the prior guy never really tried too hard to accomplish in my opinion.
