it cracks me up when the bashers call roth's act a "tribute ........". do these guys realize he wrote all the lyrics to those songs he's singing as well as all the lyrics to the other great tunes for which he does have time to play???
the closest thing we can have to 'classic van halen' (thanks to some people . . .) is exactly what roth is giving us. what i'd like to see is roth given 2 or 2 & 1/2 hours to throw down ALL the classics! can you imagine what the setlist would be like? my God! 27 (or more) of songs we all know the words to and have all done crazy shit to - that would be incredible.
thank God roth is doing what's he's doing, because without THAT, us classic vh fans have absolutely NOTHING via the choise of EVH (accept for the Atomic Punks, etc . . .).
didn't some famous america author say something about ........"the machinery is valuable, but the operator is priceless"........well, evh was the machinery (the raw music) but Roth was the 'Operator'.TX7081040

Awards:
I will never understand how anyone can think that Dave was more responsible than Eddie for Van Halen's success. I love Dave and I would love to see him back in the band, but Eddie is the one who wrote all of the incredible music.
Just take a minute and think of all of the amazing intros, riffs, solos, breakdowns and outros that Eddie has come up with. Pretty impressive, huh?

But on the flip side, considering both are responsible for the "songs" wouldn't that mean when VH went out on the road with Cherone it would justify the same response?
Sometimes the operator gets caught sleeping on the job, and gets fired, and someone has to take his place.

I'm no Dave basher but if what Dave is fronting at the moment isn't a VH tribute act, what does a tribute act consist of? Yes, he wrote the lyrics to the songs he's playing. But when 75% of the band isn't on stage (you know, the 75% that created the music that went with the lyrics LOL), how can it not be a tribute act?
If Ed dropped Alex and Mike, got a new singer, drummer and bass player, and hit the road playing nothing but Classic VH except for "Eruption" which would be his solo song (ala Dave only using "Yankee Rose" from his vast solo catalogue), what kind of band would Ed be playing in? Ed would be in a VH tribute band. Some fans would make the same argument that some Dave fans do... "Hey, he wrote all the music. They're his songs, too..." Bottom line, Ed would be doing nothing short of what Dave is doing today.
Even at VH's worst on tour, with Cherone, they at least played their new material... shitty as it was. They played Classic VH and Hagar era songs, too. That's a given. They've always played at least a couple of Classic songs on every tour since Dave left so they had to play both Dave and Sam stuff while mixing in VH3 songs. But the difference between VH at their worst on tour and what Dave's currently doing is that VH never relied so heavily on their past when they were pushing a new album. They could easily have done so. Dave's not pushing anything new this time out. Neither is Sam, but he's not the point. (He never fucking was, either.)
It stinks that Sam has more confidence in his solo material than Dave has in his. Sam's material in VH was weak. Out of VH, it's Kraft-licious. Dave's solo material smokes Sam's the same way his VH material does. I only wish Dave thought as highly of his solo stuff as his fans do...
My point is, when an artist hits the road for the second consecutive tour (the first being the one in '99), and plays songs, some of which are at least 24 years old, that were created with the band that he's no longer a part of (and for all intents and purposes hasn't been in for 17 years), and the said artist is working with the *second* guitarist that he's pimped from the same tribute act that he pimped the first... It's a tribute act.
Until Dave busts out a new album and tours behind it and his past solo albums, predominantly - not Classic VH material - then the argument can't logically be made that he isn't fronting a VH tribute act. This is the second time he's hit the road playing Classic VH almost exclusively.
The time's come to call a spade a spade, or, in this instance, a tribute act a tribute act.

Another point-of-view thread. It's discussions like this one that makes me crave for some new Van Halen music more than ever.

i'd say a tribute, and a bad one at that. Roth doesn't even sound like Dave anymore. Oh well, all good things must come to an end.

I am sure the whole band including Dave had a hand in the arrangements too...

Blah blah blah bashers blah blah blah tribute act blah blah blah.
We're becoming just like Dave--the same tired old act, over and over.

Does the word tribute ruin what dave is doing? I dont thing so. Something needs to be pretty special to even have a "tribute" in the first place! These songs, most of them are over twenty years old. Granted they are some of THE BEST songs I have ever heard. Dave need have no shame in celebrating the awesome music he has been a big part in giving us. Tribute, why not? The music sure deserves it. Hmmm..interesting.
So it's OK for 1/4 of the original Van Halen to go out and perform the old songs with a bunch of hired hands, but when 3/4 of the band did the old stuff it was a joke.Ah ok now I see how it works.
Gotcha, just trying to make sure I've got today's hypocrisy straight.
