I don’t think this has been done before but I wanted to find out which albums people prefer around here. Since this is a VH site, I’m sure VH will win most of these but there are a lot of Dave solo fans around here. So basically I’m just curious if there are certain Dave albums that people might think are better than VH albums. Strangely enough VH & DLR have released the same amount of albums since the original split in ’85, with the exception of “Live: Right Here, Right Now”, so we won’t include that one. Also we won’t include CFTH since he was a member of VH when that was released.

5150 vs Eat ‘Em And Smile

This is probably the toughest one. When VH split I kind of took VH’s side, since Dave was the one that left & I was more into the music of VH than the whole Dave shtick. But at the same time I was kind of happy ‘cause now we had 2 great bands. EEAS is my favorite Dave album but 5150 is also my favorite Van Hagar album, so this is a tough one. I’ll give it to 5150 by a pubic hair. If EEAS went up against any other VH album, it would’ve won.....but not this time.

OU812 vs Skyscraper

For me both albums are disappointments. I really dug OU812 when it first came out but as I get older the less I Iike it. Don’t get me wrong there are some really good songs on both these albums but they were disappointing compared to their predecessors. This is another tough one but I’m gonna give it to OU812 because the material is just better, but it’s close.

For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge vs A Little Ain’t Enough

OK, this one I’m gonna have trouble with because I just bought ALAE a couple of weeks ago. When it first came out I wasn’t crazy about the tunes that they released at the time, so I never ended up picking that one up, plus I was kind of bummed that the EEAS band was gone (except for Gregg Bissonette). Now I’ve been listening to this CD a lot since I’ve bought it. It’s not too bad & Jason Becker was an excellent guitarist by the way. I never realized how good he was. I’m gonna have to give this one to F.UC.K for now, it just rocks a lot harder.

Balance vs Your Filthy Little Mouth

Balance blows away YFLM. I tried to get into this album (YFLM) but it’s just bad. I used to work at record store when these 2 albums came out, I got this one for free, actually I got ‘em both for free (promos). I tried like hell to like it, but I just can’t. I haven’t listened to it in awhile, maybe I’ll pull it out this weekend & give it another spin, but like I said Balance wins this one hands down. Balance is probably my second favorite Van Hagar CD.

VH3 vs DLR Band

For me this one is very similar to the OU812 vs Skyscraper. Both albums are pretty weak. Dave just doesn’t sound good on this CD, I thought he sounded a lot better on the BOV1. Plus all the tunes are too similar, they sound like one long song. I was never impressed with this album, much like YFLM, I’ve tried to get into it, but can’t. I’ve played it for a few friends of mine who are classic VH fans only & they didn’t dig either but this albums seems to be loved by many Dave fans. VH3 was disappointing also, but the more I hear it, the more I’m digging it. There’s definitely some stuff I could do without on this album but I’m gonna give it to VH3. I keep listening to DLR Band to see if something sparks my interest but nothing has.......yet.

How does everyone else feel?????

I don't own any DLR cd's... so I can't exactly say.. but 5150 is an amazing "Van Hagar" album and still amazes me.

I totally agree with you about 5150, it's an amazing CD.

You should pick up Eat 'Em & Smile, there's a lot of good stuff on there. Just like 5150, the whole CD is good.

Great topic!!!!

5150 vs Eat 'Em and Smile
Damn, this is a tough one. I guess I'd take 5150, but it's really close.

OU812 vs Skyscraper
Both of these albums have great songs, but neither sounds right to my ears. Both are definite letdowns from the previous efforts. I think I'd take Skyscraper on this one.

FUCK vs A Little Ain't Enough
A Little Ain't Enough wins this one. I love it, it's easily Dave's peak as a solo artist. FUCK is a good album, but again it just doesn't sound right to me, I don't care for Eddie's guitar tone on it.

Balance vs Your Filthy Little Mouth
Balance by a long shot. It's really the one and only VH album that I feel like they nailed the sound on, and the songs are really strong. YFLM is interesting, but the middle part of the cd just kills it. It's actually a decent record, much better than it gets credit for, but it's not as good as Balance.

VH III vs DLR Band
VH III by a mile. Great to hear a musical genius like Eddie Van Halen go nuts and paint outside the lines. A VERY flawed album, but cool nonetheless. DLR Band is okay in places, and has some quality tunes. But Dave's voice is off and you can tell he's not surrounded by enough quality talent.

Not a crack at Dave by any means, but, Id take any VH album over any Dave solo album. The only Dave album that would even come in contention is EEAS. I just love Van Hagar too much, though.

5150 Vs EEAS - I love EEAS but it does not stand up against 5150 in any way, shape, or form. This is all 5150!

OU812 Vs Skyscraper - Ditto!

FUCK Vs ALAE - Dave is now officially out of the race after Skyscraper. After Skyscraper, you could no longer compare any of Dave's solo work against Van Halen. That includes Van Halen III. As commercially bad as it was, it still sold at least 300,000 - 400,000 more copies then DLR Band.

Ya know; I don't even own a Dave solo record. But, I don't need too. Once Mr. Vai left Dave it was over. There might be some good stuff on there, but I'm sure it's in between crap. I pick VH over all Dave solo.

5150 - though EEaS is an awesome cd! 5150 is just better imo.

OU812 - Not a whole lot on Skyscraper.

Fuck - ALAE is another great release from Dave, but Fuck outdoes this one too.

Balance - This slaughter YFLM imo.

3- Weak albums on both sides, 3 still does it. It has some good songs, and great guitar work

VH gets the sweep

i don't wanna compare whole albums.
every album has its highs and lows:
yankee rose, hina, jlp, sunburn
right now, poundcake, dreams, don't tell me

but the biggest low of all has to be:
how many say i

overall Van Hagar seems to be the winner here ... let's just say:

none of em can beat the classic VH catalogue !

cheers,
SToRM

Well gee.. I feel so odd. I am the only VH fan I know who actually loves How Many Say I! It's such a pretty song, and I don't think Eddie sings as bad as everyone thinks. I love the work done in that song... sure it's not what you'd expect from VH.. but if you forget about what's expected and just look at the song itself.. it's amazing.

i don't hate "how many say i"
i just don't even listen to it
started once, and it just made me terribly nervous.

but, hey, if someone thinks that's the best tune ever written, fine with me. I just prefer Dave's version of Coconut grove.

cheers,

I don't hate "How Many Say I", it's not a bad tune. I actually think Ed's voice fits the song perfectly. What bothers me about the song is Gary singing on it. They should've just let Ed sing the whole thing himself. When Gary starts singing, all I can picture is Ed & Gary holding hands & skipping through a field full of daisies, it just creeps me out. I just have a hard time listening to the song because of Gary, I'll usually skip it.

Actually Ed's tone on OU812 bothers me, it was getting kinda stale. I dig his tone better on F.U.C.K.

Also I think a good majority of the lyrics are pretty weak on both OU812 & F.U.C.K.

On ALAE, you can hear Dave's voice is starting to breakdown, that seems to be where he started to have trouble with some of the high notes, but like I said, I'm strating to to dig this disc.
