Default Question about a Floyd Rose Locking Tremolo

One upgrade I'm considering is a good locking tremolo. I want to be able to use the whammy but still stay in tune. I see many Floyd Rose locking tremolo's on Ebay in the range of $69-$89. That seems pretty cheap to me.....is there something I'm missing? I always assumed these cost more than that.

Here's one that I saw. Is this what I'd be looking for? And can I assume it would fit any strat-style guitar? As for as installing.....how big of a project is that?

We had a discussion about cheap Floyd Rose's a few weeks ago so I won't get too detailed now, but I'd avoid that one you linked to if I were you. If you look closely at the picture, you'll notice that the surface of the main PLATE on that Floyd looks uneven ... its not perfectly smooth ... that's a tell tale sign that the manufacturing process used to make that Floyd is a cheap and ultimately poor way to cast metal parts. Under heavy use that Floyd wouldn't last much more than 2 years.

My suggestion would be to go to http://www.axcessories.com/ and buy their Ping licensed Floyd rose or buy a good vintage BRASS Floyd Rose from the 1984 - 1991 era. I haven't yet found a GOOD Floyd Rose that will stand the test of time that costs less than $120.

Carvin sells a nice licensed Floyd Rose too. I got mine on sale there almost 10 years ago for around $120 and its still got pretty nice edges on it (and I abuse the crap out of it). Schaller makes 'em too (but you'll pay more from them).

    Good Luck

I ended up getting another Schaller from Warmoth. $155 which includes the original R2 nut, retainers, springs, etc.,. I couldn't find a better price out there. Also, it has cleaner look to it since they use shorter bridge screws so they don't really protrude out the back.

You're probaby looking at "Licensed" Floyds, not real ones.

However, from time to time you can get lucky and fine one for $75 or so on Ebay...obviously used. But so what, they kick the shit out of any of those cheap licensed crap.

Schallers are killer, anyway. Cammed edges, different, smoother feel, high craftsmanship. Nice buy.

    Thanks for the feedback.

How about installation of these things? Should I assume I'd need to have a professional setup or is it a breeze to do it myself?

I'm so bummed!! I was told by a very reliable person that my Peavey Predator strat is not capable of having a Floyd Rose installed unless I had some 'serious modifications done'. Dammit!

Here's my guitar. It came with a white pickguard but I changed it to Tortoise:

One more easy question for you. With a double locking tremolo system, how difficult is it to go from standard tuning to 1/2 down, or drop D, etc? You don't have to unscrew that piece up at the headstock, do you? My guess is no, but I'm not sure. Is it as easy as just using the little knobs on the tremolo itself?

Going from standard 440 tuning to 1/2 step down would require loosening the three allen screws on the locking nut.

However, Drop D tuning is much easier now thanks to the EVH D-Tuna.
Just simply pull out the D-Tuna and you're in Drop D!

If I were you I wouldn't even think about retrofitting a Floyd Rose on an existing guitar. Just go buy a guitar that already has one. You'll save yourself $$ and sanity.

Save up the pennies and get good double locking tremolo equipped guitar.

I second the notion that you might not want to retrofit a Floyd rose into a guitar unless you're absolutely in Love with the feel of that particular guitar. Think about it this way: You can buy an OLP MM1Floyd for a little over $250 and when the crappy Floyd on that breaks down you can simply DROP IN a vintage brass style Floyd and you didn't have to go through the hassle of routing the wood, drilling for the pivot posts, etc.

Between the time of 1991 and 2000 I built 3 guitars from parts & pieces and 1 of those was a Kramer which originally had a Floyd on it. So far, that Kramer is the best sounding, best feeling guitar I play. The others are OK but I can tell that I made compromises when I installed the Floyd because I didn't sit there with a micrometer figuring out where exactly the Floyd needed to be on the body and I'm not *that* accurate of a woodworker (I eye-balled the entire installation process - its just how I do things). The 1980's Kramer body was all figured out for me and all I did was drop in a vintage Floyd.

If you want the experience of working with the wood and the pride in trying to do it yourself, by all means you should do it. However, if you're looking for something cost effective and something that will work right out of the box, try getting any one of the $200 - $250 guitars on the market with a cheap-o Floyd on it and replace the Floyd later on with a nice Schaller/Ping vintage style Floyd.

After speaking with Mitchel at MeanSt Guitars last month he pointed out that it would take a ton of alterations to my guitar to add a Floyd. When I first started this thread I had no idea it was that difficult. I have no intentions of adding a Floyd to my guitar.

Thanks for the input, though........I appreciate it.

I know I have revived this thread but I am planning on putting together my own guitar...I have bid on a Birdseye Maple Strat Neck on Ebay (Not Real Fender...but to specs...)...and I plan on buying a Ash strat body....

Heres the link for the neck: http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...MEWA:IT&ih=004

The body I have yet to bid on....

I am just curious as there are some great guitar minds here....do you suggest that I go to a profession to get a Floyd Installed since I have never done it...or should I try it myself?

Also does the neck I linked look compatible with a Floyd Rose locking nut?

These might be stupid questions but I was just curious...

Unless you are experienced in working on a guitar..take it to a pro. The nut needs to be recut for a Floyd locking nut and the neck needs to be drilled for two holes through the neck. Not something I would do to a new neck I just bought if I didnt do it before.

    Just my thoughts....
