somethin' like.. "DLR 1996 is a lot different than DLR 1984.. to have him back would have been an insult to the fans".

It really is fucking funny how many things Ed and Al said in '96 that they are TOTALLY contradicting now. I have to say I have lost a bit of respect for Eddie as a result. I can't think of any quotes (word for word) off hand but there must have been 10 different things those guys said about "what's in the past is best left there" etc etc. It obviously wasn't Ed and Al's idea that they get Dave back!

I just think the whole saga from 1985 to now really humanizes these guys. Like anyone else, they blurt things out without really stopping to think about the old "never say never" adage. I certainly think they've said things that would have been better left unsaid, but that's not the reality when your words are recorded and then kept in waiting to impeach you at a later date. I do believe that they believed the things they said when they said them, but you can't deny someone the right to one day change their point of view.

It's easy to criticize Eddie for saying "we're never going back again" and "Gary will be the final singer for VH" and "if it doesn't work out with Gary I'll write soundtracks". It's also easy to judge the fact that Dave didn't care for the direction of the band in 1985 and makes fun of the bands' work from 1986 to 1995, yet when the door opened in 1996 he walked right in. And, even though he believes he was burned by VH in 1996, it appears that he's once again ready to walk right back through the door again.

Personally, I think musically these guys are quite capable of seeing eye to eye, it's outside of the framework of creating music that they seem to get off track.

The problem is Ed,Al,Mike,Sam,Dave,Burt Reynolds, Super Dave Osborn etc etc etc have their every word recorded, videoed, printed and they are held to it. We all say things in the heat of the battle that we dont mean 100% or things we wish we wouldnt have said, we the rabid fans have access to this info via the net and tend to hold them to it.

If Ed stuck by his word 100% he would now be playing the Tubba . They were all mad and pointing finger at each other, trying to direct the fault away from themselves (damage control). I try to take everything with a grain of salt that any celeb says in public.

You say dave made fun of them but is still willing to come back, Well, why wouldnt he? What difference does it make if he made fun of their post 85 stuff since he wasnt a part of it? He was making fun of their new more "mature" style and says it was yuppy rock when as before it was pure party rock n roll. He probably doesnt mind coming back since he was not a member of the Van Halen he was making fun of and that lineups music was alot differnt or "mature" than what he did with them. Dave hates the "mature" thing

I think you've kinda misunderstood my post. I wasn't criticizing Dave, I was just trying to point out that if a person really wants to, they can find something to criticize about any member of Van Halen.

All I was really saying was that both Eddie and Dave are allowed to have said negative things about each other and then decide to work together again. It's not like their previous negative statements should be held over their heads, keeping them from working together because they previously said they wouldn't.

Eddie, Alex, Mike, Dave, Sammy and Gary are all just Humans Being. At this point, I could care less about who's to blame. They all are. As a fan, I'm just putting htat aside and waiting for Van Halen 2001.

Just thought I would add my thoughts on this: to me it was an insult to have Gary Cherone as the lead singer of a band called Van Halen ! No offense to Gary, he just was not a good fit. Eddie and Alex both were very bitter with things at that point and said a lot of things that they are probably "eating" now.... Here is to hopeing for a happier Van Halen bunch with DLR at the helm...
