I was 12 at the time, but I was a big Letterman fan. I think those shows took place in the summer, so I usually stayed up to watch. I believe Eddie sat in with the band the whole week, but I could be wrong about that. Those shows took place in L.A., and Letterman had Johnny Carson as a guest one night. They did a bit where Carson told the setup of a joke on his show, and then did the punchline on Letterman's which came on right after. I remember in '96 Letterman had Tom Snyder on his show, and Snyder was bringing up some of his upcoming guests on The Late Late Show. One of them was Valerie Bertinelli. Dave told him to ask what the hell was going with them Van Halen boys.
