Sammy attempted tapping on the same stage
as the maestro of tapping ?
That is so Sammy. Did it sound any good ?
Surely he would have been tapping three
strings at once with those little chubby
fingers ??
Actually, is it just me, or does anyone else
think it was disrespectful when Sam attempted
any sort of lead break (when he was in
Van Hagar) ? Its like, WHY ???? You have the
god of guitar there to do that...
I dont think its such a big deal to play rhythm
along with Ed, but sheesh ?? Doing a half assed
lead solo is more than a little embarrassing
when the master is there to do that job...
Sam's not a bad rhythm guitarist, but he cant play
lead for shit... Why ?? Why ?? Why ??
I never could understand that one....

Hello Fellow VH Fans,
After monitoring this site for some time in the vain hope that I would locate some (or any) sign of life from up at 5150, I can no longer sit back without adding comment. I have taken a deep breath before typing to rid my self of all the negative thoughts which seem to flow so freely at this site.
I sincerely hope this guy was joking when referring to Sammy's lead playing. I probably wrongly assumed someone would have at least have some knowledge on a subject before expressing an opinion. If you have seen/heard Mr.Hagar up close, in concert (as I have)you would hear that he posseses feel, tone AND technique in spades! Both he and Vic are fine seasoned professionals, and but frankly Sammy could blow most of the world's rock players off the stage with his attitude and tone. He should play more. Having said that, I saw play in a club touring Marching To Mars, using the 'Red Voodoo' amps, and his tone and technique were vastly superior to the 'Live without a Net' days. I met him too, and he is a great guy; signed stuff for me & a friend of mine who couldn't make the show.
P.S. I am a fan from early 80's, so I prefer DLR with VH, but am utmostly grateful to have been fortunate enough to see DLR with Vai (Skyscraper tour), VH with Gary, and Sammy with the Waboritas. As I live in Australia, I waited a looooooooong time to get the chance. I would've given almost anything to see David and Samuel tour together. So next time you want to bag Sammy/DLR/Vic/Ed/Al/Gary, be grateful you get/got to see them way more than us fans down here did. (OK, Mike deserves it for being a spineless weasel Ha Ha!) (Seriously, Ultra Bass? What the %#&8 is that crap? and those whiny, Mickey Mouse BV's....C'mon Dave, gimme a break. Ha Ha)
Thanks and let's hope we get some music soon (that's what it's all about, right?) but enjoy what we have had so far. (I'm a Kiss fan too, and at least they are still "around" although I can live WITHOUT another Best Of/Greatest Hits/Live/Unplugged/Box Set etc etc)
RIGHT NOW, the world can be a shitty place, so let's thank Edward (God) we have had some great music to help us forget our woes.
Thanks.

OKAY its gotta stop......
I always thought SH had big shoes to fill by replacing Roth (which of course he did and did well)in fact so well....van hagar was and is a different band completely to VH1..No problem.
I can deal with that.
As far as guitar playing goes I also thought the same, you have the master guitar player in the band....why even try, but.
Hear me out, Hagar played in Perth Australia around the same time as VH..to a much smaller venue and more intimate surrounding, I was a bit dubious as to how it would be to see Sammy live....it was awesome! Full credit to the man and the band.
VH live.........They rocked!
SH live.........He rocked.
I would see them both again anytime !!

I have to admit that as far as frontmen go,
Sam is a great guitarist. But he is nowhere
near the league of Edward.
No problems with Sam doing lead work in his
Solo gigs, but it was embarrassing and
disrespectful when he tried it in Van Hagar.
I got that total "Why ?" feeling happening
whenever I saw Sammy trying to impress with
his guitar, when "The Man" himself was only
feet away.
To me that would have been like Eddie suddenly
deciding to take over vocals halfway through
Sammy singing a song. Its just not right.
Ive got a feeling that many of the Samsters would
agree with me on this one.

If you recall "Live Without a Net", the King was playing the Keyboards, thus requiring Sammy to play lead guitar. I strongly prefer Edward playing live Keyboards than the prerecorded shit they did in later tours. I always felt it sounded soooooo Cheesy when they did this on the FUCK tour. I think the solo on "Love Walks In" was great on "Live Without a Net". Sammy did a great job!

There's absolutely nothing wrong with Sammy's guitar playing, whether Ed's standing in front of him or not.
He's got great technique and tone.
Usually the ones that seem to make such a big deal out of it don't have a clue about playing themselves, and feel it's some kind of competition instead of expression.
Sad.

Sammy is/was a supierior guitarist. Is he as good as Ed? Of course not. Who is?
The 5150 tour, Ed was playing keyboards at the time and Sam took the lead on a few songs. It was good, but they were still feeling their way. To make it more of a band and like most people wants to hear Ed anyway, they changed their approach.
I had always thought Sam played some guitar on the 5150 cd, I even recall him saying something about it. Not sure he did though. I had always wished he would have played more guitar on the cd's.
Anywhoo! When I see Sam now he figer-taps on most solo's he plays, whereas when I saw him on the VOA tour, he didn't..."Keep honking buddy. I'm reloading..." -The Mard
"......HEY!.............alright............." -BIG FOOT
" I know what you're thinking: "Do I want to watch Mard? We know that horses were very strong and could actually stop airplanes from flying away. The ones made out of stone called "statues" -- occasionally came to life and rode off is a colonial cliche. How many more times do we need to hear about how the oppressive Raj's wore villainous black capes, crafted cunning plastic masks to impersonate people, and drained all the blood from their slaves so they could keep the fluid in bottles in their dungeons? I mean, YAWN!
But if you're willing to sit through this dry sort of historical drama one more time -- or even just this dry historical review -- you will not be disappointed. In fact, some of you might just learn something they didn't teach you in school!- MARD-The Movie

Everyone knows that Sammy can't match Ed's guitar playing.....who can? However, I always enjoyed watching Sammy take some lead solo's in Van Halen. I never felt he was trying to be as good as Ed like that's even possible. To me, it looked like four friends having a good time....jamming together. That's what I miss!! So you shouldn't play lead guitar if you're onstage with a great? that's stupid.
Even if Eddie encouragedhim to? I bet you Ed did.

I always thought it was bad ass when Sammy played guitar on stage, why would anyone have a problem with it?
Ill take it one step farther, didn't it seem that the Sammy era of Van Halen was holding itself back by not having Sammy play guitar on the album's and not enough on stage. "One Way To Rock" smoked, why not an actual VH song?
Just my opinion.

Sam's a pretty good player the problem is that Eddie is TOO FUCKING GOOD, so it's easy to compare."I could call it anything, but the only word I can think of is Brown. It's just a warm sound. Warm, big, majestic" - Eddie Van Halen on his Tone
"Van Halen is definitely a ladies band, and I´ve got the Polaroids to prove it". - David Lee Roth
