Heard about this "tiff" between Steely Dan and Owen Wilson this morning. The Dan have an open letter (to Luke Wilson) on their website claiming "You Me & Dupree" was ripped off from a song of theirs called "Cousin Dupree":

    http://www.steelydan.com/heyluke.html

    To which Owen replied:

"I have never heard the song 'Cousin Dupree' and I don't even know who this gentleman, Mr. Steely Dan, is. I hope this helps to clear things up and I can get back to concentrating on my new movie, 'HEY 19.' "

    http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/Movi....ap/index.html

I think it's primarily a joke (perhaps Walter and Donald went and saw the movie and felt it really sucked) and I don't think CNN/AP realises it (the key is at the end of Mr. Wilson's reply, methinks.)

I saw this band two weeks ago on Montage Mountain in Scranton and have to say this was one of the best shows i have ever seen. From Bodhisatva to Hey Nineteen to Aja it was a great show. And Michael Mcdonald was a great opening act. Go see this band in Concert. You will not be dissappointed.

Listening to a lot of Steely Dan lately. Good shit.

I like a lot of their songs but I know next to nothing about them. How instrumental was he in the songwriting?

He and Donald Fagen essentially wrote everything. I don't think there ever was a band, other than for the two or three years they toured in the early 70s. All of their albums were the two of them and different session musicians on each song. If you get a chance to see the Making of Aja (originally on vh1) you can really get a sense of how versatile they were, both musically and with personnel.

    Always loved this tune

I'll learn to work the saxophone
I'll play just what I feel
Drink Scotch whisky all night long
    And die behind the wheel
They got a name for the winners in the world
    I want a name when I lose
They call Alabama the Crimson Tide
    Call me Deacon Blues

Had a chance to check out the first two albums via YouTube on recommendation of wombattt - not bad. Better impression than when I heard Gaucho one time - probably in the ‘90s. Can’t Buy A Thrill reminded me of Eagles in that the building blocks are there, but the formula isn’t completely in place (and it’s not just the different singers). There was one song had me wondering “did Randy Meisner sing a song for the ‘Dan?” But it was the drummer. Speaking of which, for some reason the drums on “Reelin’ In The Years” bug me. I think it’s because some goof in college was over playing it and practically jerking off to the guitar solo, but you can’t rag on the guitars in that song so the drums got my wrath, lol.

When I listen to something like that, I always wonder what it was like, back in, in this case, 1972, dropping the needle on that for the first time. The listener had probably heard “Do It Again” on the radio already, but if they hadn’t - what a way to start the journey.
