    linkers,
i did a sound comparison of three versions of Jump. I edited 3 snippets of the song back to back in Sound Forge and sent a picture of the waveforms & an MP3 of the waveforms to brett and goo in the hopes that they will post them here.

the results are astounding. i can't wait for you all to see what a difference the remastering makes. the new releases are even better than the Best Of Vol.1 versions, and they are LIGHT YEARS beyond the original cd releases.

Van Halen did an EXCELLENT JOB having their own engineer do the remasters, and believe me when i tell you that these remasters are proof-positive that VH really does care about us.

Well Edge, I was totally impressed when I bought FW, 84, and II. I could tell a major improvement. I was just telling another link brother that you GOT to buy these man. VH and WB did a great thing. Out.

I'd love to see these tests. In all honesty, hearing the remasters right out of the package I couldn't tell a huge difference, but then I listened to clips of the old ones, then the new ones. That's when I was able to tell the difference. I'm not sure if that's just because I've got bad ears or whether it's from too many years of loud music.

Courtesy of VanEdge, a comparison of the three released versions of "Jump." Notice the volume difference on the remastered CD.

I bought 2 and WACF and could tell the difference right away. It's not just the volume that's the difference. There's more punch and bottom end to the bass and drums. Also, Eddie's sound seems more spatial believe it or not. I'm getting FW and DD today. I'm holding out on 1984 because I want the 24k gold version( if it ever comes out).

Oh yeah! there is no question in my mind that the re-masters are a HUGE imporovement in sound quality.

I did a lesser "high tech" test when I bought them.

I went home to my stereo system:

I put in Diver Down (the original one) listened to one of my favs: "The Full Bug"

Then, leaving all my levels on my receiver the same, I switched to the next disc in the CD player: Diver Down Re-Mastered.
    listened to "The Full Bug".

There was NO WAY YOU COULD NOT tell a HUGE improvement in sound and volume!!

It was richer, fuller sounding and it actually had a bottom end too! Sweet....

    The Re-masters are sweet!

Hey everyone, going to see 5150 Saturday at The Penny Arcade in Rochester NY.
    Third time seeing them.

Anyone else every see these guys? They rock.

Hell, in addition to that you can tell other things. I had DD in the stereo in my car this morning and I noticed a couple things:

#1. You can hear some kind of a wooshing sound in the background during Cathedral that I never heard before and

#2. You can tell everyone is singing in Pretty Woman now.

Other little things are I can actually tell Dave does say "Rythm Pigs" in Top Jimmy, and some songs you can actually hear a little outtro that was too soft before.

Definitely worth the $70 I plunked down on them. It blew my friend away when we compared Little Guitars (Intro) on his stereo last weekend. He had to turn the remaster down to keep from bugging his parents

    glad you guys all agree.
    personally, i'm thrilled.

aesthetically, they should have come out with a kick-ass box set package, but i guess that's asking too much considering we are lucky we even got the remasters at all.

regardless, they sound fantastic, and it's not just a volume improvement --- it's better sonic balancing of the frequencies.
the bass is "bassier", the treble is crisper, and everything in between "breathes" much better.

kudos to VH and their remixing engineer, Chris Bellman.

Goo's gonna post a link to an MP3 I made of my little analysis for anyone out there who wants to check it out.

Thanks to Goo & Brett for getting my files on here. I haven't set up my own server yet.

Ok, I'm convinced. I'm buying the remasters.

Now the only question that remains......

Can they make OU812 sound like it wasn't recorded inside a tin can?

(or are the Van Hagar discs even scheduled for re-mastering yet?)

Dunno, FORD. Time will tell. But I'll be pissed if they don't at least do it to 5150 and OU812.
