Speculating here that Eddie liked:
Dave's ability to weave a melody through the rythm.
Sammy's ability to write a strong hook
Gary's willingness and depth of content.

Dave write a melody? I believe that was all Ed, with Dave making the lyrics fit in. A lot of the lyrics didn't make sense, but that's Dave. Sammy write a hook? I believe that was all Ed as well, with Sam fitting lyrics in the same way as Dave. Sammy's lyrics were O.K., but he could sing much better than Dave. Gary was thrown to the wolves, and was under pressure to perform within a very short amount of time. Unfortunately it failed. To answer your question, Sam definitely had the most talent, and I believe Ed liked working with him best. Personality wise, it's generally stated that he's always had conflicts with Dave (from day one), got on fine with Sam until the end, and always got along with Gary. Again, I'd have to go along with Sam on this one, as Gary wasn't around long enough for conflict to start.

Just my opinion
Talent wise Ed thought Sam the better singer but dave brought a stronger personality. result=
The second was no contest for the first 5 years Ed and Sam were closer than Ed and Al even were. Hell they lived next door to each other and used to stay up all night writing songs together and just bullshitting. Ed and Dave never really got along as well because it was always Daves way or the highway. Ed always resented that.

I doubt very much Ed gave much input to the vocal melodies Dave and Sam came up with. Either he liked it or he didn't, but I don't think much of what either guy sang was Ed's doing at all. I think at the end with Sam he may have made a lot of suggestions, more than he used to.

I remember reading somewhere that Ed never really considered Dave a good friend.

Loser, does "looking for a moonbeam" make sense? Dave had a knack for filling holes with statements like that. I'm not knocking him by any means, but lyrically, it wasn't as good as Sam.

"How do I know when it's love?... I can't tell you but it lasts forever." Classic. Like a modern Shakespeare! Very ground-breaking original stuff!

I agree, Cobra. A lot of Dave's lyrics were like the interviews that he gives...clever one liners thrown in at the right time that may or may not make sense to the listener. (I don't think his timing is quite as good but that's another topic altogether.) Sam's lyrics, like them or not, were usually more human...i.e. about love, sex, cars, or something else that Joe Sixpack could relate to.

I think Ed liked Dave as a co-worker. I think as the years went on he liked DLR less and less. For some reason, when Ed and Val got married that just about killed their relationship.
I also think Ed liked and is proud of the work he did with Dave, probably more now than before. But I recall reading a recent interview where Ed actually said all Dave did was write the lyrics. The he (Ed) wrote all the music AND harmonies.
As far as Sam, when he joined VH, I think Ed fell in love with the guy. I think Sam was eager and easier to work with and a lot less critical than Dave. I think Ed felt limited working with Roth whereas with Sammy's vocal diversity, he could really "spred his wings" and venture into other musical outlets that he wasn't able to before. I also recall a interview where Sam was asked if he ever wrote music for VH. He said no. That wasn't how Van Halen opperates. That he did lyrics and harmonies. But he said from time to time he would help structure the music, or have idea's how a song might flow. Like he said he wrote the introduction to Right Now.
I also think that they had a true friendship. Like someone said before they were neighbors. On the RHRN video Sam kisses Ed!
It really is a shame things worked out the way they did...I think their best music was yet to be written. That their best years was to come...
"Keep honking buddy. I'm reloading..." -The Mard
"......HEY!.............alright............." -BIG FOOT
" I know what you're thinking: "Do I want to watch Mard? We know that horses were very strong and could actually stop airplanes from flying away. The ones made out of stone called "statues" -- occasionally came to life and rode off is a colonial cliche. How many more times do we need to hear about how the oppressive Raj's wore villainous black capes, crafted cunning plastic masks to impersonate people, and drained all the blood from their slaves so they could keep the fluid in bottles in their dungeons? I mean, YAWN!
But if you're willing to sit through this dry sort of historical drama one more time -- or even just this dry historical review -- you will not be disappointed. In fact, some of you might just learn something they didn't teach you in school!- MARD-The Movie
