Blatantly obvious. Roth is THE lyrical master.
"Knowing is not enough, we must apply, willing is not enough, we must do" -Goethe
Minds are like parachutes. They only function when they are open.--Sir James Dewar, Scientist (1877-1925)
Always drink upstream from the herd...

It is amazing how much some people can do with so little, however, what is even more amazing to me is how little some people can do with so much.

I think the song was more of a message to Eddie than it was predicting the future. Lines like "How many times, does somebody lie. Before patience runs her course" is a direct jab at Eddie and Co.

The part that made me laugh my ass off is when Eddie bitched about the song in his 97 interview in whichever guitar rag it was. "Can't get WHAT anymore Dave? I mean what the hell was that all about anyway?" It was about YOU, dumbass!Eat Us And Smile
Welcome back, Van HALEN!!!!
...It's the BAND and Dave is really the cat that can front VH. He sang his ASS off and was really cool. No cheese here guys, this is filet Mignon! - Steve Lukather's comment after witnessing a Van HALEN 2007 rehearsal

I've always felt both new Dave songs on the BOV1 had lyrics that show Dave was referring to not only the situation between him and the band, but also the music and the fans.
When he says not to lie, just listen to me, and then refers to his advice being taken as a fortune cookie, I always felt he felt that his take and views were not important and tossed aside as far as any decision making going on during the recording of the 2 songs and also possibly to appear together in public.
I know I toss a fortune cookie aside without a second thought, whether I take the time to read it or not. People who have played music together for any period of time, can read the "tells" of the other band members in much the same way the big time poker players can read the tells of an amateur that they've suckered into their game. Dave knew something was up, without a doubt, and the proof is in the lyrics, like it or not.
Yeah, Dave was the ultimate party song guy, but he can work the gray matter as well as anyone when he so chooses. If he felt the guys were using him for those 2 songs and had no intentions of trying to do more music or tour, then what better way to leave your mark, than by telling your side of the story of a couple of songs that will reach the larger portion of the band's fan base.
Maybe one of the reasons Dave had trouble putting together lyrics for those songs, was that the idea of being used to sell records, with no intention of doing anything else with him, ruled out in his mind certain material that he might have regularly written about. Those two songs are sure not "Party" songs, in the sense of the earlier Dave era VH songs. As has always been the case with Dave's lyrics, they mean something different to everyone. But if you will take the time to go to any site with VH lyrics, and read the lyrics to those 2 songs from the view of someone who feels he is not being dealt with in an honest manner, you might see things a little differently.John 3:16, Can You Dig It?
People, the 6 wings of the Mighty Van Halen will fly again! Can You Dig It?
You gotta give more than you take! Can You Dig it?
And underneath the arch, it turned into a march,
and there He found a spark to set this fucker off!
Set it off, set it off now children, set if off!
We are down the road! I Can Dig It! Can You?

You're suggesting that Dave knew in July (when they recorded his new lyrics) that he was being double crossed. Yet in his letter from October 2nd he stated;
Then, a series of events last week led me to discover at about the same time the press did, that the band, along with their manager, had already hired another lead singer, possibly as along as three months ago
Also, if he knew in July that they were fucking him over, why did he stand there with his nuclear smile at the MTV awards and allow the fans to get excited about something he knew himself (in July by your theory) was never going to happen? That's lying to the fans, HIS fans, allowing them to labor under an illusion that he might be re-joining the band.
Eddie may be guilty as the ringleader, but Dave is guilty by association. If he knew what was going down in July, he's got no excuse for parading around false hopes in September.

Glenn, don't you know by now that Dave is never guilty of anything?

I don't think Dave knew what was going on until it happened. He'd have no reason to lie. He may have been suspicious, but I don't think he knew until he said he did myself.

Ratt had better hooks, melodies, and a whole lotta fun and attitude. Dokken had too many cookie-cutter songs that sounded similar and were kinda dull.
