Cornell Not All the Rage
Tue Mar 26, 4:46 PM ET
Now that he has some free time on his hands, maybe Chris Cornell can go on tour with Sammy Hagar and David Lee Roth. Better yet, he could lend his superhuman wail to the singer-less Van Halen.
The former Soundgarden frontman is apparently unemployed at the moment, having exited the much ballyhooed band he formed with members of Rage Against the Machine--all before the band could even settle on a name.
No reason was given for the walkout, which was confirmed Tuesday by Cornell's manager.
Before its demise, the short-lived supergroup recorded nearly 20 songs with famed producer Rick Rubin that Epic Records was planning to release later this year. And while the nameless band had yet to play a gig, they were slated to be among the headliners for Ozzy Osbourne's Ozzfest 2002 tour this summer.
Sony reps had "no comment" on the split. Publicists for Ozzfest did not immediately return phone calls.
The new band was said to be a major musical departure for the politically charged Rage, which was left singer-less in October 2000 when frontman Zach de la Rocha quit following a communication breakdown.
Cornell, on the other hand, parted company with his Seattle-based grunge group Soundgarden in 1997. After the lackluster success of his first solo outing, 1999's Euphoria Morning, he began rehearsing with Rage guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk. Something clicked. Backstage at last year's Grammys (news - web sites), Morello said the informal jam sessions with Cornell had been "groundbreaking."
Built around Cornell's octave-shattering pipes, the new sound was reported to be more melody-driven hard rock instead of the funkified rap-rock style pioneered by Rage.
By last spring, reps for both artists' confirmed the project was more than just a one-off experiment.
"Until the boat founders on the shoals, this is as permanent as anything," Rage's manager, Peter Mensch, told the Los Angeles Times at the time.
Time to call in the Coast Guard.
While news of the split may be disappointing to those Cornell and Rage fans who had been eager to hear the new sound, plans are still underway for Epic Records to release an album of original material recorded by the band over the last six months. No word yet on when the collection will hit stores.

Cornell is an amazingly talented singer and musician, and I would LOVE to see what he could do with Van Halen. I'm not sure their styles would mesh very well, but it would be interesting to say the least.

No doubt Chris Cornell is a talented singer, but I just can't see him with Van Halen. If a 4th singer is the decision,I would say it will be some singer from some 80's hair metal band. Perhaps VH is on the path they should be on doing what they are doing now. Think it is time they 'don't go away mad, just go away'.
Life is something that happens when your planning something else.

Let me guess. Zach de la Rocha and Chris Cornell will meet and...surprise!...hit it off great. Chris' webmaster will break the news to the RATM internet community, then both former singers will go on a summer tour together with their respective bands...the "Zach and Chris Tour," if you will. Fans of both Rage eras will flock to the show.
Nah, that could never happen.

Whats dis? I am way mo' doper and fresher than "rusty cage" Cornell. I can out duel that homo any day on the spin tables. If Eddie V needs a new voice to kick some fresh lines fo hiz house band, I am the one to do it.
Put my phone # on yo speed dial and give me a call Ed! Lets me and yous put it together and teach your "old" school rock fans whats going down TODAY!

</font>
ACTUALLY, they were going to be called 'CIVILIAN', but some legal snag (maybe another band with that moniker?) cause them to withdraw the name. They were still deciding upon a name when they broke up.

I love Chris Cornell's voice, but he would not go with Van Halen. All lead singers please report to their respective bands and stop all this nonsense!
Could this be magic?

There is only one man for VH, and that's DLR!
Maybe Ed and Chris can do something as a separate project, but I doubt that would work...

I was set to open up a fresh can of whuppass and flame someone bad, figuring that someone levelled an unprovoked attack on my alma matter -- Cornell University -- "High Above Cayuga's Waters..."
But then I saw it was about Chris Cornell, not Ezra Cornell.
NEVER MIND.
P.S. Can anyone see Chris singing classic VH -- that boy takes his melancholy in great big doses.
