after reading the recent opinion at VHND i just had to speak my mind about something that's been talked about here many times.

I understand people would like to hear Dave play more of his solo stuff on tour these days. Or at least feel he should be playing more of his solo stuff. But why do people always berate him for playing VH music pre-1984 that he CO-WROTE. On VHND he's accused of playing VH covers tunes! How can he be playing cover tunes when he CO-WROTE every one of those songs. they are his songs to do what he wants with them. When VH goes out and has gary cherone sing a set list containing Mean Street, etc they aren't accused of playing VH cover tunes. They're playing their old catalog. But dave does it and people say he's playing VH covers. I dont get it. and I know the argument is "well VH still play other non-Dave VH tunes, etc" Ok i get it, i agree. Dave should have the balls to play songs from his solo albums. But enough already with bitching about Dave playing songs he CO-WROTE....

i dunno what exactly your point is edward....

the stuff ive been hearing from this DVD inclusing the mean street thing, doesnt excite me much.

my whole thing with dave's solo music these days is i feel he can still write some entertaining, fun lyrics. even if u hated the musical direction on YFLM or thought DLR BAND wasnt that great, ya gotta admit he still can write good lyrics.

dave's problem throughout his solo career has been finding talent to provide the music for those lyrics. he'll never find another like Ed. but it's what's always been missing to a degree. dave's not a musician. he's said it himself. he doesn't really write music. he writes lyrics. the guys he surrounds hismelf with these days just really aren't up to the task. Vai and Sheehan were close. and someone else here made a great point once that he should've let that band become a band and not just his backing guys. dave needs to be part of a band. not a "solo" artist.

anyway i'm rambling. that is all...

What I think it boils down to is this: Once a musician starts playing only their greatest hits on tour they become a nostalgia act. That means the party is over. People don't want to think that the Dave party is over. That's why there is so much resistance to him playing all those VH tunes.

I'm a realist. I know the party's over. That's why I just try and enjoy whatever it is that Dave puts out. Sometimes he makes that difficult (that 2nd clip from the DVD was terrible). Sometimes I like what I see (Mean Street was pretty good).

There will be a day when Dave isn't here anymore. Until then I will continue to try and enjoy whatever it is Dave is putting out.

DAve is living in the past, that is the problem. Look at Sammy, he barely plays 5 VH tunes in a set, and his solo tours are mosre successful.

I believe the reality is Dave wrote lyrics only. Eddie wrote the music and the melodies. I think that is the reason they are considered covers. They all share writing credit, but how much input do you think Mike had? And Alex probably not that much more.

I don't think this is true at all. Dave was into everything especially when they were a young band.

No, his problem hasn't been finding talent. His problem is keeping talent.

Dj88, if Dave's decided to hang it up and coast, that's fine. Unfortunately he's going in two different directions. The tours exclaim that he's done, yet this DVD points to horrid new directions.

This is what I think is going on. When Dave tours he has to do it (maybe in his mind only?) playing all old VH stuff.

The new direction in music is aimed at getting a new audience in hopes of getting back to the top again.

That's what I think is going on anyway.

IMO: Dave's solo work was awesome: Yankee Rose, Goin Crazy, "Shy Boy (Sheehan), Showtime, ALAE, "Tobacco Road (cover)", Drop In the Bucket are all tunes he SHOULD play in his set and the crowd would love it. He was stuck on the dream on his last tour that he was going to get back with the best band in the World so he decided to play 99% VH songs. I wish they would get back together and make some new tunes and play arenas!
He was being berated because fans were tired of seeing his cover band play Van Halen tunes...they wanted Van Halen...plain and simple!
