I'm hanging out with friends and were watching VH1 classic when "Yankee Rose" comes on. The collective reaction of the room was Now, I remember the video from back in the day but watching it after so many years felt like being trapped on a cruise with the Village People and Liberace. The opening monologue is hilarious and the tune kicks but what is with the gyrating on Vai's leg and the other assorted "antics" ? Why the hell did Dave bring this "showmanship" quality to the VH reunion in 96? He had the gig, him and Eddie were friends again making music, Me Wise Magic had the attitude and was a good stepping stone. If Dave had shown up with a t-shirt and jeans, kept his mouth shut, worked with a vocal coach and stopped smoking horse tranquilizers, we'd all be comparing setlists of the second reunion tour, right now. Instead, he decided to go "Yankee Rose" and the whole thing collapsed. Look at how Jagger balances showmanship with his singing. C'mon Dave, give us a break. An F' shame. I think if he hadn't rubbed Ed the wrong way at the MTV Awards, things would be much different now.

So what your saying Brett is that Gary rubbed Eddie the right way...

    Sorry couldn't help myself!

I don't think Dave blew it. I think Ed just used the MTV awards as an excuse to give Dave the shoe.

I'm almost certain Eds intention was to stab Dave in the back in the end. Ed was already auditioning Gary anyway.

Either way, I think Ed blew it every bit as much as Dave did. Look at the situation!

I totally agree with you. Dave even said that folks in the Van Halen camp already knew Gary had the job at the point of the MTV reunion.

I love Eddie as a guitar player, but him and the truth do seem to part ways from time to time.

I think the whole Dave fiasco was premeditated by Eddie just to sell their Best of CD, and to antagonize Sammy.

He sure acted gay at times. But I think a lot of performers act gay nowadays. Like that Justin guy who was supposedly dating Britney. That guy is just too effeminant. Hard to believe he is actually straight. Who knows? Perhaps it's just a cover.

I tend to believe that they were going to give the job to Gary Cherone no matter what had gone down at the VMA's. Eddie has stated that he didn't even want to attend the awards, but MTV put pressure on him and the band to show up. He wanted to stay home for Wolfie's first day of kindergarten.

When they walked out with Dave and the crowd went crazy, I think Eddie realized that he had made a huge mistake. People assumed, and understandably so, that Dave was finally back in Van Halen. Dave proceeded to be Dave, and Eddie got pissed off. It was like all of the bitterness came rushing back and Eddie now had his excuse to give Dave the boot (even though he had no intention of making Dave a permanent member of the band).

Eddie and Alex used Dave to pimp the BOV I and then gave us the worst case of bait and switch in the history of rock-and-roll. Here we are 6+ years later and all we have is VH III , thousands of rumors, and no real answers. Pretty sad.

All of you are fucking assholes. Stupid stupid stupid. It was said from the beginning, even by the so blindly revered DLR himself, was just a couple songs for the BOVI. DLR himslef even said they were aditioning singers. EVH didn't fuck anyone over, was all as was said, anything else is just some pissed off fan running off with the mouth as always.

I have always said it is the VH fans that destroyed Van Halen, and I say it again. If you wearn't such a bunch of selfish whine asses there would be a couple albums today to listen to.

You're an EVH apologist. Eddie didn't fuck over Dave, as Dave knew the score at the time. Eddie fucked over the fans, if you didn't notice. He was a willing part of a deception against all of us, designed to sell albums.

It didn't matter what Dave did at the MTV awards. Gary was already in the band.

I'll say this about Dave. There was no one cooler on the planet when he was just being the lead singer of the Mighty Van Halen. Watch those video's from the Oakland 81 show. That is the DLR I want to remember.

Somewhere along the way, DLR started believing he was a comedian, actor, writer, producer, moviestar...

If you were to step back and look at Roth's career from a distance, you can't help but ask "what happened?". He went from being one of the coolest frontmen ever to being rock's clown prince and finally a parody of himself. If you didn't grow up a VH fan there is no way you would ever be a fan of Roth today. His poor reputation today with the press and critics may very well keep Van Halen out of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Personally, I wish Dave could find the right combination of medication to bring him back down to earth. But I can't see that happening. He is not of this planet anymore.

I would be a fan of David Lee Roth today due to the kick ass nature of the DLR Band.

Plus, I find that his quick, witty replys to reporters, or the people who call into radio shows to be quite refreshing. The man talks on a variety of subjects with a great deal of detail. The man just plain likes to have fun.

    Period.

Go back and watch some of his old interviews, or read some magazine interviews with him from the VH days. He's always been over the top.

Yup, he's always been a sucker for a real good time!
