Wether some of ya'll like Nirvana or not it's all good to me. I just come on to mention whenever I hear something about VH, especially if it's positive.

In the new VH-1 Kurt Cobain DRIVEN show they mentioned Eddie Van Halen and even showed a clip from him playing in the JUMP video.

One of Kurt Cobain's few close friends recalls how Kurt wanted to start his own Music Magazine.
He had even written up drafts with mock interviews, band facts & bios etc..

His buddy then recalls:
"There was this one nite Kurt busted out with all these facts about Eddie Van Halen. How Eddie unwound his pickups, the certain amount of wiring. Stuff that, well, you had to have read the article."

It's funny that it took the pathetic and biased media almost 10 fuckin YEARS to finally mention Kurt knew something about VH! lol

In fact it is now known, thanks to author Charles R. Cross of Heavier than Heaven, that Kurt grew up worshipping bands like Van Halen, Sabbath, Zeppelin, ACDC, Maiden, Kiss, Priest, Cheap Trick, Aerosmith etc..
Eddie VH was Kurt's hero for a good long time back in his early years.
He owned all the albums of these bands and jammed along to them growing up. Until he finally discovered punk at almost 17 and then left those other bands behind and NEVER mentioned them really.

It was also not mentioned how when Kurt was 16 he went to his first rock concert: Sammy Hagar!
Kurt himself use to lie and say his first concert was Black Flag. Well, Black Flag was his first 'PUNK' concert. But back in 83', when Kurt was 16, Sammy was his first concert!
And they say he was blown away by the whole thing and even went to school the next day in his Sammy concert t-shirt!!
Oh, but the press cant have anyone believing that a Red Rocker show might have been a life changing moment for Kurt. So instead they ignore that fact and always mention how the Black Flag show changed his life..lol

The press & media are too damn funny.

How don't know how can Black Flag change a life
EVH: Definitely. Playing guitar was my sanctuary. It was the one place I could go to if I got fucked around by a girlfriend, or anyone else, for that matter. It still is. If there’s something I can’t deal with, I can just spend hours playing. It’s a God-given gift – I certainly don’t know where the ideas come from. They’re obviously given to you, and you have to keep your fingers moving and your mind quiet. I try my best to not think about thinking, so I can just let it flow. Because when I start thinking, forget it. <br />So....why he isn't playing guitar ? ? ?

I think it's funny that Nirvana always seemed to stand up for NOT being a media darling when they were still around, but then Dave Grohl ends up being a media darling.

Badabing,

If that Sammy show at age 16 was truly a "life changing event" for Cobain, I don't think he would have covered up the fact the he attended it.

Think again dude. He NEVER mentioned it. EVER.
His stupid obsession with 'punk credibility' and 'indie credibility' wouldnt allow it.

His friends and family said he came back from that Sammy concert amazed at the whole experience.
The fuckin guy even went to school the next day beaming, proudly wearing his Sammy concert t-shirt and showing it off to everyone!

For a guy who became obsessed by punk music and who craved indie cred, do you really think it would be looked upon as 'cool' by his peers if he admitted that his first concert was Sammy Hagar?!? lol

Come on, you know it wouldnt sound cool.
Shit, you can get disowned for that!
The funny thing is his one of his idols, Black Flag, where lead by a guy who LOVES Van Halen! Henry Rollins may be a punk icon but he LOVES Van Halen and always refers to classic VH as 'some of the most genius hard rock music ever".
But unlike Henry, Kurt didnt possess the balls to admit all his true musical influences before getting turned on to punk music.

A month ago it was Def Leppard. Last week it was Aerosmith. Now, this week it's Nirvana. Kurt never had the balls to admit his true musical influences before getting turned onto punk music? WHO THE FUCK CARES! Whine to someone else.

Hey jagoff if you dont like my post dont fuckin read em'... lol

I am flattered you sooo closesly monitor my every move & post. Frankly I dont recall a damn thing you have ever posted here... lol
Probably cuz it was nothing of interest. I come on here and always post cool quotes on VH made by other artists and I gave the scoop on the March Guitar World issue with Van Halen waaaay before anyone else even had a clue and several weeks before it came out. I even came on and posted the entire detailed contents of that issue after it hit the stands. I feel like most of posts contribute something to this board.

I LOVE Nirvana. Unlike sellout Aerosmith who cant even write their own tunes and silly ass Def Leppard I respect Nirvana and have caught hell for it on these boards. I dont really give a shit but I just wanted to let ya know.

Bottom line is I respect Nirvana very much but Kurt was a very hypocritical human being when it came to talking about his musical upbringing.
It aint so much that he lied, he just didnt tell the entire truth.
Anyhow he hid and never mentioned many of the bands he loved and grew up on. Find me one, just one goddamn interview where he mentions he loved VH growing up and that Eddie was his hero.
Dont even bother cuz there isnt one.

It's a shame he didnt have the balls of a Henry Rollins. Henry never let his punk status keep him from speaking out about his love and respect for Van Halen, Led Zep and more.
It's called an OPINION man. Deal with it. Choke on it for all I care...lol

I feel what you are saying 'bing. When Nirvana broke I remember the media quickly turned it into a "new school vs. old school" kind of thing. It was the "anti-rock star period". The "anti-guitar period". What a pathetic sham.

Every one of those so called "grunge bands" partied, drugged, drank and lived it up. They made tons of cash and where all signed to major labels. They played arenas & festivals to thousands of people. They chased chicks & got poontang whenever they desired. They all were guitar driven bands as well. Many of their songs & biggest hits contained guitar solos and heavy distortion.
They've all admitted, sooner or later, to being fans of & influenced by those classic rock bands you mentioned(including VH).
I really believe had they been more honest about not hating or disliking hard rock & metal bands things may have been a bit different. Players like Jerry Cantrell of AIC never shied away and made crystal clear his idols are EVH, Brian May, Jimmy Page and so forth. Most players did not however.
I remember kids thinking that if you liked Nirvana, Soundgarden or Alice in Chains you couldnt like VH, Guns n Roses or Zeppelin.
It was created by the media and most grunge groups rolled with it. What a total sham because those grunge bands loved those classic rock bands.
If Cobain knew all those facts about Van Halen he had to be a major VH head. Anyone who knows the specifics about how EVH custom wound his own pickups is more than just a casual listener.

Good post man. Your posts are a breathe of fresh air compared to the usual "Who's better: Sam or Dave?"

I like Nirvana a lot too.

The bottom line is, in the early 80's, Van Halen made such a huge impact on the rock scene that anyone interested in rock music of the day would have been influenced by them in some way or another.

Badabing,

The Hagar concert was a life-changing event for Cobain because, according to friends and family, he really enjoyed it and he wore a Hagar shirt to school the next day? When I was 16, I enjoyed most of the shows I went to and usually bought a shirt that I wore to school the next day too. The vast majority of those shows were something less than "life-changing."

And on a side note, Rollins thinks Sam is a joke; says so in one of his books. So while I understand the point you're making about Rollins' love for VH, it's kind of ironic at the same time.

P.S. -- I also got a big kick out of your reply to Hissing Cobra where you went on and on how you broke the Guitar World story to VHForums. Priceless stuff. You really take other peoples' bait and run with it, dude.

I have never heard anyone with an association with DLR comment that Sammy can rock. I would like to ask Rollins what he thinks of Montrose's first album and I bet the answer still comes back in a negative. This guy is a friend of Daves and Daves friends will never say something complimentary about Sam which is just bullshit.
