Here's what he said on 94WHJY.
"Fans were expecting the mighty VH but were dissapointed when it was different from what they were used to. But when they came to the shows they loved us"
In response to why he left VH.
"We wrote songs for our second record but it wasn't easy. We were divided the whole time."
I'm guessing that it was Gary and Eddie vs. Alex and Mike.
In response to VH/Roth reunion.
"I did know that they were writing with Roth but I don't know what's going on now. But don't be suprised if they do get back together with Roth or Hagar. I think both of them will be back again"
Hhmmm?
In response to who Cherone thought was the worst VH breakup
" I don't know. I just know that when I was in VH I knew enough to keep my(bleeped out)fucking mouth shut!
And when I started speaking up during the writing of the second album that's when things started falling apart."
A little later in the interview..
"I don't keep in much contact with Ed anymore"
Sounds like things weren't so rosey with VH3 afterall, huh?
Can't say I'm suprised.
Cherone is a classy guy so I was suprised he said this much. I'm pretty sure now that it was a lot more down and dirty at 5150 during the Cherone era than we were led to believe by Mr. Truth himself, Edward Van Halen.

I personally think that Gary felt a little more comfortable voicing his opinions on the second record as opposed to simply being along for the ride during the first one and basically being a yes man. It wasn't Eddie and Gary vs. Alex and Mike, it simply was a case of Gary trying to add his own voice to the band and more often than not being shot down that's why the split occured. Van Halen didn't allow Gary the freedom that he needed in order to be an integral part within the band that was probably a big reason for the split. Perhaps if Ed an Co. had allowed Gary some more breathing room the results would have been much better.

I agree.
According to some rumors that's why Dave isn't in the band right now. He's not a yes man.

Some big time comments from Cherone. I am sure that he tried to add some to the band and Ed shut him down.
I really assumed that the cd, tour, and 2nd recordings for the next record with Cherone, were what caused the band to cease with Cherone. Whether it was the record company or not, I never thought that Gary had a hard time getting to get some more input into the sound of the band. I never considered that Ed's "soul mate" would ever get shut down.
This is another reason why III with Cherone will always be Eddies solo project , to me.

Does some certain guitarist have problems with individuals who express their opinions/ideas?

Ok, I dont want to seem like an anti eddie spaz or anything, but thats basically three singers that he has been through now. I know the first two certainly had faults of their own, but ed was no picnic for them either. Gary is a pretty gentle personality. I just see too much in this pattern pointing to edward being a prick with his singers. He's not about just going out and rocking anymore, its a power struggle and internal soap opera. The internal stuff is overiding the music and the fun of rock and roll.

The fact that Dave is out touring, celebrating the Classic Van Halen era, and the boys are sitting around "waiting to see what happens " (in Ed's words) does not make Ed, Al, or Mike look good in my eyes !

Couldnt agree with you more Seenbad.
I think Ed wants complete control over the music and wants Al to run the buisness side of VH, Mike is to just agree and show up when he is told to. Thats not a band.
((Just My Two Cents))
And thats about what its worth.

Ed did admit in an interview in Guitar
World in late "99 that he made Gary sing the songs on III exactly how he wanted it sung so the idea that problems arising during the seesions for the next album isn't hard to believe.
