They can go from the almost PUNK feel of Shattered, into one of the most soulful/R&B infused
    things, i've ever heard.

Sometimes you forget, how gorgeous this entire song is:

"Some Girls" just has THIS sound.

I remember, being a little kid, hearing these songs all over the radio in '78/79,
and i recall thinking: Wow, these songs are great...the guitars have that sound....

Is it like a phaser on a tele?
    Kinda nasally, but really cool.

    "Some Girls."

The last truly, great Stones album.
A masterpiece, that sounds & smells like NYC in the mid to late 70's.

    It's funky, it's sleazy, it's heartfelt, it's dangerous...

I liked Emotional Rescue & some other tracks, but "Some Girls" is
the last of a truly incredible run of albums, by the Stones.

It was Chris Kimsey’s engineering and the new amps

    From Wiki
The sessions for Some Girls began in October 1977, breaking before Christmas and starting up again after New Year's before finishing in March 1978. Under their new British recording contract with EMI (remaining with Warner Music Group in North America only), they were able to record at EMI's Pathť Marconi Studios in Paris, a venue at which they would record frequently for the next several years.[4] The Rolling Stones ended up recording about 50 new songs, several of which would turn up in altered forms on Emotional Rescue (1980) and Tattoo You (1981). Chris Kimsey was the engineer for the sessions. His approach to recording breathed life into the somewhat dense sounding recordings like Goats Head Soup (1973) and It's Only Rock 'n' Roll (1974) albums. Kimsey's direct method of recording, together with the entrance of the then state-of-the-art Mesa/Boogie Mark I amps instead of the Ampeg SVT line of amps, yielded a bright, direct and aggressive guitar sound.

Very cool, never knew that, yet i could hear the difference.

All their albums sound great, but i felt "Some Girls" had that "spank" on the guitars:
The aggression of Shattered, the pristine beauty of Burden...
Graver, Walking Ed, refugee from CVH & proud tone chaser...

A large collection of studio outtakes have just been unearthed. A lot of interesting stuff that hasn't been heard before. Most of it is on You Tube for now. It's 3 CDs worth. Some of it is different versions of song you know. It's got stuff from the 60's to the 90's. Here's one from 1982.
