If it was embarressing to Van Halen, that doesn't mean it was embarressing to MTV. Plus, these days there are precious few great moments that happen in rock music in my opinion.

ummm, I sorta disagree. Even though the aftermath of the VH reunion/MTV thing was embarassing, the actual event was pretty spectacular.

I mean, as soon as i heard the BUHN BUHN BUHN BUHN BUHN BUHN BUHN of Michael Anthony`s bass and the ORIGINAL VH strolled out, looking like they`d never broken up, getting one of the biggest ovations i`ve ever seen ON ANY AWARDS SHOW EVER...

I mean, that really showed a youngster like me what DLR means when he`s standing on a stage beside those 3 boys. I`d say that was one of my greatest VH moments, I thought they were back for good at that moment.

The one sad thing was...I felt bad for poor Sammy, because at MTV awards people were acting all like `so, where you guys been the last 10 years`

    bizz,
don't let that 96 appearance fool you.

that audience was the biggest assembly of hipocrisy i have ever seen in my life.

mtv and it's culture have never really supported van halen. they have used them for fodder in their news segments or an occasional "rockumentary" where you learn nothing new. mtv rather enjoyed the joke that dave had become after vh, and other than recognizing how original the "right now" video was, HARDLY EVER played van halen.

mtv realized it could make more money showing cartoons and playing rap music because that's the audience that would be glued to the tv 24/7. van halen was only good for mtv when there was controversy. other than matt pinfield, there were never any good VJs after the originals because no one besides matt had so much as a clue about what was going on outside of the mainstream.

so, when MTV realized it could garner huge ratings by making people think Van Halen was reuinited with Dave, they RAN WITH THE IDEA.

no one, and i mean NO ONE who considered himself an educated fan of this band could honestly say that the Van Halen's 2 song reunion with dave was permanent. the band never once said it, and neither did dave.

did dave want it - definitely.
did the fans want it - that's pretty obvious.
did van halen want it - probably, deep down and only if dave would be on equal ground 24/7

did MTV want it? mtv didn't give a shit about anything but ratings and would do whatever it took to be the cool medium that people could "count on."

everyone in that audience that gave VH a standing ovation made me want to puke. they didn't know shit about van halen. they just wanted to be cool and get on camera.

    I guess you`re sorta right...

But if you go back and watch the show, about half the people jump out of their seats as soon as VH gets out there.

You`re right though...because after that, the other half of the people look around, see everyone else is standing, then jump up too.

But still..Whenever you hear mucisians talk, from whatever branch of music, you always hear shit like `If REAL Vh gets back together, it`ll be huge...it`ll really kickstart hard rock`

I get the feeling that younger, heavier bands have always hoped for a Vh reunion, because it could benefit them so much.

I think now is an even better time than 96...Hard Rock is starting to make a comeback, and if VH does reunite, they will just instantly become the class of the hard rock scene...

On the other hand if they got David Coverdale they may have a shot at getting some of their songs thrown straight on a BIG ROCKIN`80`s compilation...(K-Tel would have to give special permission to allow songs from 2000 to be placed on their limited edition 80`BIG ROCK CD, but nothing`s too good for Coverdale. He deserves to be on the same disc as the Damn Yankees, Warrant, Tesla, Poison..and even Whitesnake !!) We`re talkin a lot of royalties here people...

It's number 88, I can't help but think it would've been ranked a lot higher had the reunion not gone to shit afterwards. Even though it fell through, I can honestly say I have NEVER been so excited by an event like that! I still get chills when MTV rolls it on their "Best Of VMA" or whatever it is.
