Watched I love the 80s on Vh1 wednesday night which was 1984 and 1985. The were doing a bit about the We Are The World project and the camera shifts to Hagar and his comment was, ( I'm pissed that I wasn't invited but other than that it was ok). Just what I have come to expect from the angry little man. Discuss

I love those shows (they take me back to jr. high/high school), but I can't believe how little Van Halen content there has been. I heard some VH songs in the background, but no mention of VH anywhere (unless I missed it). They talked about Def Leppard, they showed a Motley Crue video, but no VH. I don't get it - Van Halen ruled the world in '84. Let me guess, they are waiting until '85/'86 to talk about the Roth out/Hagar in thing, right - like they never did anything interesting before that.

Excellent point P1. Gee, wasn't 'Jump' the first video to be shown in the year 1984? Didn't it hit #1? Typical MTV.
As for Sammy not being invited, I hadn't heard that before. Maybe there were too many people with huge hair that they wouldn't have been able to all fit in the room.Remember the Heroes - 9/11/01

I saw that bit as well. I don't understand his delusions of grandeur. He was not on the "A" list of the music biz in 1985 pre VH. This is not a slam on him either. He just wasn't as well known to the masses at the time of USA For Africa. Why didn't he participate on the metal version(Band Aid?)? Maybe he did, I don't know. That was more of his genre at the time. If he weren't invited to participate on that project I could understand a little hostility, but not "We Are The World". C'mon Sam?

This is nothing new.

Yeah I don't quite get Sam's comments there either, he wasn't an A-list rock star in 1985. Now if it was 1989 or something and he wasn't asked, then maybe I could see his point, because VH validated his solo career IMO, much like it did for Dave.
The fact that they totally ignored VH except for "Panama" and "Jump" playing in the background from time to time is just one of the many slaps in the face MTV/VH1 continues to dish out to VH. Still bitter from 1996.
All singers have inflated their self-worths, that's why they're singers to begin with, always needing to be the center of attention.Webmaster

I'm not standing up for MTV/VH-1, but they pander to the artists that kiss their butt. It's a symbiotic relationship. You know MTV has asked VH to be a part of things for their shows and VH-1 has certainly solicited them to do a Behind the Music. Van Halen has declined so those channels have declined to promote them anymore.

I see it as a good thing that Van Halen didn't get mentioned at all so far in the 80s special. It's a show on pop culture. Not revolutionary music. It was about pop culture--i.e. fads.
However if it were a piece on the music of 84 or 85, which VH1 did, Van Halen would get featured--and have been featured on the 84 show.
So them being overlooked is great in my mind because they were talking about commercials, wierd toys, movies, fashions, and passe music. I'm glad they don't get lumped into that stuff because they matter when it's about the music.

You guys are blowing this one way out of proportions. Sammy was asked the question probably about the same time as the VH1 Rock the House thing was taped. VH1, as other media outlet do, will ask a ton of questions that don't seem related to each other, knowing that they have specials they need material for. So when Sammy sits down to do Rock the House he gets asked about.
We Are the World
Milli Vanilli
Boy Bands
David Lee Roth
Hair Bands
George Bush
Your favorite christmas gift
Led Zepplin
Eric Clapton
the Beatles
New Kids on the Block.
These types of interviews are almost word association things. I'll mention something and you tell me what you think about it. I'm sure before it's all over your see Lionel Richie commenting on rap, Punky Brewster on Bon Jovi, and Tiffany on Van Halen.
Sammy just gave a better answer than someone else who was asked the same question. I wouldn't take his answer so seriously.

it's hard to ask someone to come sing "we are the world" when they are beamed up in the mothership!
Qunicy Jones:"well, someone saw Sammy out in the parking lot, but when we approached him to come sing the song with us there was a white light and then he was gone"

Hain, just because I like you in a sick, masochistic way, I'm gonna let you in on a secret....
The whole Sammy/aliens/anal probe/mothership thing stopped being funny about three weeks ago. All it does now is make you look like a wanker that laughs at his own "jokes." Consider it a public service, man
EDIT: You know, rereading this, I realized I opened myself up for ALL SORTS of jokes with that first line there...

I think that Sammy was being just a bit sarcastic about not being invited.

I finally watched that all the way through. Frankly, I buy it. I think he's telling the truth. Watched a follow up film fully produced with better quality from an interview done later in his life...
