I was just watching the 1984 Montreal concert and the band opened with Unchained. It was probably the FASTEST version of that song I ever heard... Was someone on speed that night or something?

Massive amounts of blow can sure as hell do a great imitation of meth, huh??
Al seemed to be the one really ushing the tempo through out that entire show. Hmmmmmm.
What's funny is in hindsight, like it or not, how much tighter the band played rhythmically just two years later on the 5150 tour. Watch the Montreal show back to back with Live Without a Net and it's not even like the same three guys up there. The 1984 tour depending on your taste may have been more entertaining, but short of a better extended guitar solo was nowhere near the caliber of musicianship shown on the Hagar-era tours. Roth-era shows seemed like they were all over the map as a band, not locked in.
That was one of the most amazing things about seeing Roth this summer is hearing how tight the band played all those tunes live underneath him. Seemed almost weird to hear him "Dave-ing" over such a consistent band.
Just my two cents....

When I saw them live on that tour in Salt Lake City they also played it really fast. I also have the boot CD of the San Diego show from that tour and it is also faster than a speeding bullet. Maybe because they opened with it during the tour they were just pumped up and blasting off, I don't know. Then again maybe they did a few lines of booger before they went on. Who the hell knows?

Since Eddie opens that song, I'd say he was the excited one.

I've always found "Panama" on LWAN really fast too. It's a lot faster (almost double-time) than the original from 1984, that's for sure.

It just seemed to me that Alex was really pushing tempo through the entire show. I can remember other situations where Ed might rush an intro and Al would reign him back (i.e. Little Dreamer from the Pasadena Civic show in '77) but for the Montreal show at least, they both seemed pretty wound up.

Thank you. It was done up by my buddy Mike, who was a GM mechanic at the time, for racing. Was a lot of fun!
