I think people are really getting confused and some inconsistant stuff is getting sayed.
First, of course I'm really concerned with Ed's cancer and wish him to get better. I guess we all agree on that.
But I have to disagree with most of the posts out here. I think his cancer situation has nothing to do with the delay of the album (I'm not taking about the tour).
Because IT DOESN'T TAKE THAT MUCH ENERGY to record guitar parts on an album!
Let me prove my point by giving a few elements.
I think non-guitarist linkers get confused with when they see Ed jumping around on stage, and studio work.
In the studio, you're basically sitting on a chair, recording music. I've recorded an album, and playing guitar involves much less physical work than singing or drumming.
And we all remember that Freddy Mercury recorded till the day he died, although his style of singing surely demanded considerable physical energy, and his condition at the time was much worse than Eddie's. I actually think that his life-threatening disease ACCELARATED things more than slowed them down. He was really focused on leaving as much material behind as possible.
Numerous albums have been recorded by guitar players with very poor health, due to drugs, alcohol and various other things in the past.
I mean knowing ED, do you think he's just sitting on a chair thiniking about the disease? I'm sure not.
If his condition was abd, he'd probably fisnish the album FASTER.
And if they weren't recording, Mike wouldn't have said they were working on it. I know Mike, he's not the guy to cover up the truth.
If you think that they've been in the studio since early 1999, they have A LOT of songs ready.
I don't think the cancer thing was used as a PR ploy. I think Ed answered a rumour that was floating on the Net about a private matter (cf the Tracii Guns "interview"), because he didn't want it to get out of hand, maybe scare some relatives.
It just happened that the previous day VH spoke about their career, responding this time to a statement by DLR. I think the two are different, they just happened in a very short period of time.
As for the what's happening with Roth, at this point we still don't know. But we have to look at other reasons for the delay, that's for sure.
I think VH's PR is very inconsistant, and has been for a few years now. I think it is still legit to question it, as far as how "the machine" behind VH works, and at the same time showing tremendous respect and affection for Edward Van Halen.Little Dreamer

Guess you've never had cancer Little Dreamer. Chemotherapy zaps your energy completely, nevermind the fact that you are tired almost all the time. Now I've never had cancer but my uncle has some sort of oral cancer that is in remission, and he was severely worn out and tired. Besides that, there are other things in life besides fucking recording an album when you think your life is fleeting.
Some of you are acting very selfishly, I am getting kind of annoyed with some of the attitude on here, so think I will stop posting today before I really get pissed.
BTW, I've never recorded sitting down, I don't like to. And I've read that Ed doesn't either.

Seeing as you claim to know what Ed's health is like, why don't you give us the details?
You can't expect an ill man to be at his best creatively, or physically. It's silly to suggest that he should be working, as you don't know the situation.
At the same time, what he does is entirely up to him. I'd have no problems if Eddie decided to take a lot of time off to spend doing whatever it is he'd like to.
I am ticked that they allowed us to be under the impression that they were working, but from what we know of the circumstances it's pretty reasonable that they weren't working.
You really can't compare Ed's situation to Freddie Mercury's. Freddie knew he was dying, and only had so much time left in which to produce work. That's what he felt was important then. Rather different than what Ed told us yesterday, me thinks.

He has cancer, and oral cancer at that. It is inevitable that he had chemo, but nothing is for sure. However, he was thin, gaunt, and it is obvious he lost his hair judging by the Peavey pics and the NAMM video.

I agree with MikeL. I wish the band hadn't made it seem like they were really working this whole time, as it appears they weren't.

Little dreamer, a no. of us have recorded albums, and recording is different for every single person that walks into a studio.
Ed doesn't just record. He writes, arranges, and is there for every little detail as the song moves along. His mind has to be there as well, and if he has priorities he considers to be higher, or more serious then they may take precedence over his music.
He might be looking at things in a different light at the moment and might not want to jump out of bed every morning and run into the studio to get the next song on tape.
Things change when you're living life from day to day, and while that hopefully isn't the case with Ed, at the moment that's possibly the way he sees it.
He's accomplished a hell of a lot musically throughout his life, and hopefully will be doing a lot more as time goes on, but he's gotta be in the right place emotionally as well as physically.
As it's been said on numerous threads already, the most important thing right now is that Ed beats this completely.
Man, I'm being as nice as I can in this post cause I don't think you have a clue, but I think I'd better stop now as well.

Hey, you guys have misread my post. If you read correctly, I never said Eddie SHOULD be recording. First I don't consider myself in any kind of position to tell Ed what he should do, that would just be ridiculous. Second obviously if his condition doesn't permit it he's probably not recording.
What I was saying is that I disagree with some of the post suggesting that his condition or the little we know about it has been the cause for the delay in the recording of the new album. I believe there are as many signs if not more saying that they are currently working on the album than there are hinting at at a slow down due to health reasons.
True, I've never had cancer and haven't been to 5150 yet. But I'm not sure with the brievety of Eddie's statement any of us can have a precise idea about his health.
Even Val has said "Eddie's doing great" recently.
If someone is "doing great", in my book, this implies his health is in a state that permits recording, maybe not on an intense schedule, but nevertheless permits it. Now I'm not saying he SHOULD have been recording, just reading things differently than some other linkers.
I think music is quite important for Ed and that's why he's probably making music as we speak. I'm not saying he should record because I'm impatient to listen to the new record, don't get me wrong.
In that sense I don't believe it is fair to label me as selfish.

I think Little Dreamer was misread too. Maybe it had to do with the title of the thread and the little guy.

You know, if nothing else, cancer puts your entire life in perspective. It makes you tend to want to overcome petty differences and set anything you've screwed up in your life in order.
I'd have to say if nothing else hopefully this experience brought Eddie close to Val and Wolfie and maybe even served/serves as a catalyst to put beygond in the past between him and Sammy - DLR too, assuming there isn't a more sinister side to the story in '85 than we know about "Just once I'd like to do the right thing and not get punished for it."

Recording can be reeeally damn stressful. I know it takes a lot out of me and I'd never want to do it if I was even a little bit sick.
That being said, we do NOT know how sick Ed is, or how it's affecting his ability or desire to put stuff on tape. I just hope that if he needs to be resting, he is.
Brett pointed out that Eddie looked really thin in the Peavey video and that most recent picture. I was actually hoping that might be because he's been busy working in the studio and skipping meals right and left. Brett, I don't know, is losing weight a common effect of chemo?
God, this is gonna sound sappy, but I wish we could, like, send Eddie some flowers or something.

I love Philadelphia Freedom. Always reminds me of 1975. The year of KISS, Evel Knievel and the Six Million Dollar Man. That was when Elton had the best lineup: Davey Johnstone, Dee Murray, Nigel...
