VH B-Sides and Singles

Just looking through the singles section of the official website, and I realised that with one exception (Crossing Over), Van Halen have never done any B-Sides. Did the singles only serve the purpose of promoting the album? A shame that they never seemed to value the idea of the single, espiecially as they always put album tracks on instead of proper b-sides, meaning it can become a bit confusing what the single was.

Also, on the whole, their singles never charted that highly in the chart, despite the fact the albums sold so well. Is this because of the lack of b-sides, or is this normal for a big American rock band?

Actually they've had 16 Top 40 hits.

But yeah just about all of the singles have album tracks instead of B-Sides which kind of sucks.

Top 40 charts can certainly misleading.
For example "Feels So Good" charted, but I doubt very seriously people think it's better than "Hot For Teacher", "Right Now" or "Best of Both Worlds", songs that didn't crack the Top 40.
