The George Lynch Effect. Almost got hired by Ozzy but his hair was too damn short. I've seen footage of Dokken around the same time and he did look silly. Total preppy! But George later went crazy with his hair. Remember when he looked like he a had a skunk on his head?

I think No Rest For the Wicked was a solid enough slightly meh 7/10 album when it came out. I don't remember anyone thinking Zack was 'godly'. In fact following Randy and Jake it was a big drop. This was 1988 so by then Vai was well established, EVH obviously although now in a much weaker AOR band and various people like George Lynch and so forth.
You were seeing people in good bar bands who were better than Zack although he did have nice enough hair I guess...
I went to all those gigs.
Live Zack could play the Randy Rhodes stuff but not the Jake stuff.
He couldn't write songs or guitar parts that were as good as Randy but sometimes wrote better music than the weakest Jake.

I actually prefer No Rest for the Wicked over No More Tears. That album to me is like Ozzy wanting to be Def Leppard with the production.
I read an interview with George just a few weeks ago and while he didn't address the hair, he had a decent full time job when he was hired by Ozzy. I am curious if having a job was part of the reason for his shorter hair. Back in 83 long hair was a bit of a hinderance with jobs. He was discussing how he quit his union job, had a wife, kids and then Sharon got rid of him a few weeks later. No additional compensation.
I still would have liked to hear a version of Ozzy and him. Jake was the better choice but I do think Ozzy and George could have worked
I went to a Guitar Clinic I think during the first Lynch Mob album. I can't recall if he brought it up during the clinic or afterwards but I know I asked a question about the Ozzy gig and then Randy. He said he is kind of on an Ozzy album. Said he showed Randy the tapping part to Flying High Again and Randy used it. When you listen to it, it sure seems like a George lick more than Randy. I don't recall that ever being said again....so unsure if true or not however I know he said it cause I heard it

While Zakk does not play it just like Jake, I don't think he is in the Vic Johnson realm .....haha.. He is playing most of the notes close enough....
Quite a few examples from official releases. YMMV
Live & Loud, this is from 1992 in California. BATM outro at 3:40
Budokan 2002. BATM outro at 3:49
In all the years Zakk has played LIVE with Ozzy, they have only done 2 Jake era songs. BATM and Shot in the Dark. The other deeper Jake cuts were with Gus G.
