I think even the band is surprised by how much money they’ve made since 2017.

Guns gets a lot of crossover interest.

They appeal to the 70's rockers, they appeal to the 90's grunge crowd, and they appeal to the punk crowd.

They are 10 years behind VH time wise, and their core audience's average age is a perfect target point for a massive group of people that both have money from being older with good jobs AND are still not too old as to have started experiencing bad health/energy issues that would effect attendance.

This reunion tour happened at the perfect time to max out ticket sales for their core fan base.

They also have almost zero competition for this type of wide variety rock/punk/Eltonish style rock. They can do a lot of different styles of music very well.

They also have an interesting rock n roll story filled with high drama, and major news stories from the last 25 years that increase their notoriety media wise.

    They also write KILLER music:

Sometimes timing is everything. We will unfortunately never know just how massive a CVH reunion tour and album could've been in 97-98.

The failed reunion of 1996 will always bum me out. That was the perfect time for the return of the OG Mighty Van Halen.

The standing ovation the band got at the VMAs signaled that a reunion at that time wouldve been seen as an "event" and so you wouldve had a lot of at most casual fans going because it was "cool". They wouldve been able to play plenty of stadiums.

Yeah, even Chris Rock was excited.

Count me as a fan who is floored this tour has been going on as long as it has playing a core setlist (with a few ChiDem tunes and the occasional surprise one-off deep cut) that's basically the same thing they've been doing since the later part of the Illusion tour in '93. Yeah, I expected it to be a big deal the first year but 5 years later with basically no new material or at least a massive shake-up in the setlist?

I think it speaks as much to the lack of quality rock bands and music the past decade as to how good classic GnR and their albums are. There's just a segment of people that today's music just doesn't connect with and a dearth of newer bands that can fill arenas or stadiums.

I think it would have been huge but Dave was arguably as bad vocally as he was from 2012-onwards. The horrible bleached hair plugs didn't help his case either. Fans should count their blessings that however it was done, Dave got his vox together for the '07-08 reunion and was imo, the MVP of that tour.

I wouldn't call myself a huge GNR fan, but I do like a lot of their music. I'd say these 2 new songs are duds, well they just suck IMO. I don't understand because I enjoy a lot of Slash's solo stuff lately, not great, but it's good.

I think you nailed it, new music is mostly soul-less auto-tuned drivel.

Btw the song Chinese Democracy sounds 1000x better in concert with Slash and Duff.

I know that UYI I & II didn't land with you and Brett and a few others here personally, we discussed it a bit a few pages back.

But those Albums and Tours ( UYI - 91-93 = 7million tickets sold) did tremendously well at the time. The Videos were huge on MTV.

They were HUGE for a lot of GnR fans. Not you, I get it, but this was a big album for MILLIONS of people. Like a few have said, it crossed over several genres. Especially pop Top 40 with November Rain, Don't Cry, Estranged and Hard Rock with You Could Be Mine.

    Lies sold 5,000,000 copies

    UYI sold 7,000,000 copies

    UYIII sold 7,000,000 copies

Greatest hits with AFD, Lies and UYL material sold 10,000,000 copies

HOW do you not understand how massively popular they are?? WORLDWIDE as well. Just like Metallica and Maiden, insanely popular across the GLOBE.

I know it wasnít posed to me but to answer your question, no. Not surprised at all, and Iím not even a huge GnR fan. They were the biggest band in the world along with Metallica and then they faded off with a popcorn fart in the mid 90ís due to turmoil in the band.

The entire World wanted that reunion.

I also find it funny that you, being such a proponent of CVH as you are, canít understand why GnR was so loved.

They were two bands essentially ushering in new eras of rock music.

You had VH killing off the disco era, making hard balls to the wall rock music a truly massive draw.

And then you had GnR killing off the hair metal era (arguably a worse era than disco) making hard balls to the wall rock music a truly massive draw again. Essentially Aerosmith on HGH. Thatís really what GnR was.

Both bands served the same function a decade apart.

VH in 96í would have done huge business. Possibly even worldwide, if the band decided to take their heads out their asses and acknowledge there were other continents aside from North America.
