Sorta funny how FUCK gets talked about for great production and drums. There is something good there, but sorta too muddy and not my favorite production overall.

Well what if 3 or 4 of those 11 songs are played to death and usually skipped one of the greatest debuts obviously can't deny it!

Yeah for me VH songwriting really started to expand and take more interesting shape from VH II onward. Of course I love the debut to death, but I prefer the next 5 records where they really became the Mighty Van Halen.

They were obv young and green on the debut. Some of the songs are fairly straight forward in structure and the solos are pretty simplistic for EVH standards > RWTD, YRGM, ATBL. All iconic VH songs (and overplay def dings them a bit for me).

FW and WACF are my 2 fav and sweet spot where they had few yrs of touring experience w matured songwriting, diverse vibes and all the VH ingredients firing perfectly.
I hear ya', but I will always maintain that the debut is their best record. There's a very good reason that albums like LZ IV, VH I, Back In Black and Appetite For Destruction get played to death.

IMHO, it has something about the production of their previous album, man. OUhate12 is damn poor in terms of drum sound. So when you get to listen to Alex's power drumming again on the next record, you tend to comment it a little more. Besides, Andy Johns did a good job and he told to some magazines the way he recorded those drums - even Guitar World had an interview with him and Ted Templeman the year F.U.C.K. was released. I probably read those stuff to the core.

I dont know man. Listen to AFU, Sucker, Source, Black And Blue, Mine All Mine, the drums sound better than on FUCK to me, except for the kick drum. But I'll definitely take the snare and toms on OU812 over FUCK. I was highly disappointed in Andy Johns' work with VH.

I agree with you. I love the drum sound on OU812. It is just the bass that is too low in the mix, not the drums.

Yeah, the lack of bottom end affects the way the kick drum sounds within the overall mix, but the drums sound really good on that album IMO. And Alex's playing is great of course.

I mean, C'MON, listen to those monster drums at 2:36. Nothing on FUCK sounds as clear and massive as that part in AFU. Besides the fact that Al is just kicking all kinds of ass on this tune.

Or this. Al's drums in the intro sound MASSIVE, without being a muddy indistinguishable mess like Poundcake.

IMO, THAT is the sound he needed on Beats Workin', especially the beginning of the tune when he comes in. The toms in that part sound so flat to me and the opening needed that massive drum sound.

This is why, when I was 18 or 19, I think it was the Inside Mag that ran a poll asking who fans thought should produce the next VH album, and I wrote in Jimmy Page. This was around 1992 or 93 and I always wanted to see what kind of sound he would get out of the band, particularly Alex. His production on Zep albums was always pretty awesome. Bonham is probably not in my top 10 of favorite drummers, but he definitely was always produced just about perfectly and had an amazing sound on tape.
