    The Journey thread!

Journey is a great band. I am a huge fan of Neal Schon. I got to see them live in 2002, they sound even better live than on the albums! I love their new drummer too Deen is great! I am hoping for a new Journey album soon, I am not sure when that will be though. I loved Arrival, my favorite Journey song is Higher Place.

"Escape" was the Journey record that hooked me. We'd just gotten MTV in the house and every other video was from a concert that they sometimes showed on Sunday nights. "Don't Stop Believin'", "Who's Crying Now"....fuck, I had to buy that record. My first vinyl Journey purchase.

"Frontiers" was bought pretty much the day it came out. I'd just seen the Video for "Separate Ways" and decided that some extra housework (and thus more allowance money from mom) was in order to get the next record. Loved every video from that album, even the ultra cheesy "loading dock" video for "Separate Ways".

    "Raised on Radio" was......er.....was.....

The reunion record "Trial By Fire" was fuckin kickass! Great to see the "Escape/Frontiers" lineup back in action. "Message Of Love" was quintessential Journey.

"Arrival".....nice. Yes, Steve Perry is missed.....but Augeri is the only one who could have replaced him. The boys knew what they were doing when they hired him. It was Journey! They had to SOUND like Journey. "Red 13" was a nice treat...four extra songs.

Apparently they go into the studio next month to begin work on a new full-length CD. My wallet will be waiting.

ohh by the way... there is a documentary of the frontiers tour that was done by NFL films of all people. probably one of the best rock documentary films I have seen, but you may have to look through some really old VHS tapes to find it.

I was a big Journey fan back in the pre-Escape days. There are a lot of great songs on that album, unfortunately they're all the onest that DIDN'T get all the airplay for being a power ballad....

Steve Perry: Great pipes, shitty attitude. Should come off his trip & get back with the band.

Neal Schon: Bay Area music legend. One of the most underrated because they turned up the fucking keyboards louder than his guitars...

Gregg Rolie vs. Jon Cain: Rolie in a heartbeat. Cain's a great composer, but he cemented the band's cheese niche with all of the love songs. Rolie helped the original core of the band stay true to its roots as long as he could.

Ross Valory (I'm not even going there with Randy "American Idol" Jackson, Dog.: Very underrated as a bassist. The cat can lay down a groove like a mofo.

Steve Smith (Deen Castronovo, et al don't count): "Machine Gun" pounded it out album after album. Even when he hit the skins on the power ballads, you knew he was trying to rock. One of the true last of the "musical drummers" breed. Don't believe me? Listen to the drum track alone on "Don't Stop Believin'".

Journey: A band that evolved into the same mold that Aerosmith did, but unfortunately, the original band didn't stick it out to be able to return to their roots like Steve Tyler & the boys did.
Q: Recording the album took so long your Australian tour last year was cancelled. What was it like in the studio? There's a history of tension between you and Eddie Van Halen...

DLR: It was like a stand off in a Chuck Norris movie. We each had the laser dot on everybody's forehead waiting for the other guy to blink. Except for Wolfie, he had a Super Soaker ...

    Yo Hec,

You should really check out the Storm project that Rolie, Smith and Valory did in '92. It's very much in the realm of classic-Journey. They got a guy imitating Steve Perry on it, but Rolie gets to sing lead on a few of the tracks like in the old days. Very overlooked and brilliant album.

Great band! The only time I got to see them was in 2002. I was shocked to hear how Augeri sang some of the classics. If you closed your eyes, you would swear it was Perry. I agree that Neil Schon is very underrated guitarist. I would love to see Perry reunite with them for one last hurrah but I don't think that will happen.

I saw Journey back in 1986 and they were awesome! They're an awesome band that never gets any credit whatsoever. Those of us who are old enough to have experienced their music when it came out though, remember when Journey DOMINATED rock radio. During the early 80's, they were probably the biggest band in the world for a short while.

By the way, it irritates the shit out of me when that gay ass MTV makes fun of the band for it's video of them on the loading dock by the ocean. These ass clowns downgrade a band for a dumb video. Hell, pretty much all video's suck.

The funniest part is that I remember vividly that period of time. I used to be a teenager that watched MTV as well. The "Separate Ways" video got TONS of airplay. I mean they got the kind of airplay they now give fuckin Eminem or.....blast, what the bloody hell do the kids like these days? Usher or something.....

Anyway MTV bashing them is a touch on the hypocritical side.

    I used to love Journey.
Did anybody catch their "Behind the Music" special from a couple of years ago? Steve Perry might be coocoo for Cocopuffs.
