This really is a misnomer, we don't send that much out in foreign aid.

$50B sounds like a lot, but when your budget is $6T, it's not what's breaking your budget.

Our deficit this year is projected to be $1.8T. Without foreign aid, it's projected to be $1.75T.

    Foreign aid ain't the problem.

We are writing to bring your attention to the recent increase in thefts of catalytic converters that is sweeping the nation. This situation has become so widespread that it has prompted numerous state legislators to propose new laws to combat the problem. Knowledge is often the first line of defense, so we are providing the following information in a question-and-answer format. We hope you find it helpful.

Are thieves targeting my Mitsubishi vehicle?

No, thieves are targeting all vehicles. Simply put, to a thief, your catalytic converter is worth the risk of personal injury or even arrest if caught, as it may be worth hundreds of dollars in scrap value. Thieves are opportunists, and they will choose the easiest vehicle to attack, in many cases this means sport utility vehicles (SUVs) or pickup trucks because their higher ride-height allows easier access to the exhaust system. Additionally, hybrid vehicles are popular targets as they blend gasoline-powered internal combustion engines and electric motors, and may use the gasoline engine less than the electric motor which puts less wear on the converter.

    What is a catalytic converter?

Since 1975, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has required each vehicle sold in the United States to be equipped with a catalytic converter as part of the vehicle's exhaust system. Catalytic converters use "rare earth" precious materials such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium to convert the harmful chemicals in vehicle exhaust into harmless gases such as steam. These devices are mounted underneath gas-powered or hybrid vehicles as part of the exhaust system.

Why are people stealing catalytic converters?

The price of the precious metals contained within the part have dramatically increased in the last several years. For instance, rhodium has increased 307% since January 2020 and 2,505% since June 2016, and is currently trading at a price of around $24,000 per ounce. This increase in the value of the materials inside your catalytic converter makes it a prime target for thieves. This is a nationwide problem that has hit every state and has impacted every automotive brand.

How do you know if your catalytic converter has been stolen?

The catalytic converter is part of your exhaust system. Therefore, if it has been removed you will notice a dramatic increase in engine noise as soon as you start your engine, possible stuttering when accelerating if you drive the vehicle, and by looking underneath your vehicle you will see that the middle of your exhaust system is missing as well as possible evidence of torn-away piping.
What can you do to mitigate the risk of catalytic converter theft?
A catalytic converter can be stolen in less than two minutes and can result in a costly repair. While it is impossible to completely prevent falling victim to any theft, there are steps you can take to increase your chances of preventing such theft from occurring. These steps include parking in a private garage or well-lit and highly visible area, checking your vehicles routinely, and parking where surveillance cameras are prevalent and visible.

What do I do if my catalytic converter has been stolen?

The first thing to do is to contact your insurance company. This is theft Ė similar to someone breaking into your car and stealing the radio, for example Ė so it is handled with your insurance company. It is not a warranty item for which your vehicle manufacturer would be responsible for replacement. Next, you should report the theft to your local law enforcement agency, and file a report if necessary. Your insurance provider will provide information about towing the vehicle to an authorized repair facility, and they will provide you with information regarding alternate transportation while your vehicle is awaiting parts and being repaired.

With this knowledge, we hope you will be able to avoid being the next victim. If you have any questions about your Mitsubishi vehicle, your local Mitsubishi Motors dealer partner is the best place to start.

If you have other questions, you may always contact our National Customer Assistance Center at 1-888-648-7820.

Just don't know why that was even necessary for this story.

It might be located one block away from the entrance to their private community, I doubt it's one block away from where they live.

When I was watching coverage of this condo collapse in Surfside, very early this morning, it took a little while before I realized exactly what had happened.

At first, looking at some of the pictures on Twitter, I thought that a "corner" part of the building had fallen forward.

But the hard reality is, it was more like an entire section of the building pancaked straight down.
