I think she is a good person and it's okay if she can't shine through the hype. There are lots of athletes who face the pressure of always rising to the challenge and fall short, but they dig in and give all they can give and don't quit on their teammates. They can then face the cameras and their teammates and say, I wasn't all there and it wasn't anyone's fault, not even my own, but I refused to quit on you.

Like I said, you’re entitled to your opinion, but I disagree with your initial post and this response.

Out of curiosity, do you, or have you played a sport at a high level?

Regarding sports, no. But, I am no stranger to high expectations from myself and my peers and I have felt overwhelming anxiety to deliver under immense pressure. I've not always delivered my best but I've never quit either.

Admirable, for sure. To stick to this discussion though after you said this, our discussion is over.

Simon Biles is a 5 time overall World Champion, and holds 25 Olympic medals with 19 of those being Gold, an Olympic record. Yet she’s a quitter?

Very interesting situation. I never knew her background with the mental health issues. I guess back in the day, people would have said, “Oh, just suck it up.” But if her mental health is that bad, then maybe what she did was better for the team as a whole. I saw that vault of hers and she looked terrible.

I am quite a bit conflicted on the SImone Biles issue. Of course it is her mental health and she knows whether she is up to competing, and frankly the stuff that these young women do could cause serious injury or even death with just a loss of concentration.

Yes she is under enormous pressure but I think back on the days of Chris Evert and Martina Navriltilova. Evert was never seen as the better tennis player. She was seen as the one with more mental toughness tho and that was her best weapon on the court. She would stand at the baseline and look the same during a match she was cruising thru as she did in a match she was losing. Her opponents never got into her brain. Martina lost a lot of matches just due to her being less mentally tough. Martina was stronger, faster and had more skills than any woman out there, but her lack of focus and dedication led to problems in her training and then on court. It took sports psychologists along with trainers to make her the legend she became.

So while I appreciate Simone for understanding that she just wasn't up to the task this time and taking care of herself and ensuring that her teammates had the best team they could put out there, I have a little trouble getting behind the people who are applauding her decision as though it is a victory and not a defeat

I just wonder how we got to a place in sports where quitting was the "brave" choice. Yes it was a tough decision to make, when the world was expecting something different from you, but to make her some kind of hero for quitting? Yes, lets celebrate her tremendous career but lets not look at her quitting as the high point.

I think that the world should take the enormous money spent on the political shit show known as the olympics and give it all to laboratory cancer research every 2 years.

That being said, Simone Biles quit on her team and I don't think that should be celebrated. I think she made a very selfish decision to even pursue Olympic glory this time around, as she was clearly not ready to face the pressure of this Olympics at this moment in her life. Had she announced prior to the games that she was overwhelmed, not 100%, and struggling with mental health issues, then I would stand and applaud her courage to do what was right for herself and her teammates. Instead, she pressed the issue, could not perform up to her high standards, and when she confronted her imperfection she quit. She simply quit on her team and the United States of America.

It’s probably being viewed as a victory because nobody should be under pressure not to speak up. Regardless of the circumstances. Work, sport, anything.

And anybody who’s being overtly critical of her, if it was their kid they’d want them to speak up and back out, too.

Or would they just call their kid “a quitter”?

I feel bad for her. This Olympics was largely about her in the publicity build up, and for her to perform like that and then withdraw, I have lots of empathy for her.

One thing I will say, I was surprised to find out she's 24 years old. She's no longer a kid.

I know nothing of this Simone Biles or what's up with her except for what I've read here.

All I can say is she must be an American... her issues sound SO American in today's America.

I'm waiting for one of the girls from China, Russia... or even East Germany to have the same issues... but I bet it will never happen.

    American's are pussies. Lol!

Don’t forget that she was in foster care before she was adopted.

Add the strict bubble of the Tokyo Olympics and being separated from her family….

I appreciate your perspective. I'm an open-minded person, so my thoughts on the situation will likely evolve with additional information and understanding. Again, she seems like a good person and she has accomplished so much in her career and absorbed the spotlight and expectations like a champion at such a very young age. Everybody has their breaking point or that moment in which they put their own needs first, and I respect that. The timing and circumstances are unfortunate, but they are what they are and I don't have all the information and never will. I'll couch my judgment in favor of understanding and empathy.
