It's probably harder. I have no issue with him saying that. We get the joys of a bunch of white executives yap about diversity to us every couple of months. Our group of coworkers is insanely diverse. Upper management, not so much.

I think we all--all--have to be reasonable. I remember Dennis Miller saying, I think about transgenderism, "You just told me blackjack is now 22. Fine, just give me 5 minutes to wrap my head around it."

One of the things we spent a lot of time studying in linguistics and that I use in teaching my students to read (usually 5 grades below grade level, on average), is that we all speak in different dialects depending upon who we are talking to. So it isn't so much we are eliminating it from our vocabulary, but we are thinking about the language of the particular group we are interacting within.

My current principle is trying to eliminate "bro" from his vocabulary, and like others I use "guys" in a non-gender specific way.

We also have an employee here who I adore who identifies neither as male nor female and uses the title "Mx." instead of Mr., Ms., or Mrs. and it took me a bit, but now I do it regularly. And this person has been very understanding that it's all new, and that she is biologically female, so it just takes time.

But, yes, as far as my professional life, I am currently working on not saying "guys" anymore, and they also taught me in credentialing classes to use "gentlemen" and "ladies" as collectives and, like "guys," I need to start rethinking how I address an entire group of young kids.

I used to say dumb things were "gay" or that someone acting stupid was being "faggy." It was a common thing here in SoCal, at least, and it was wrong and while the intent was anti-gay, I totally get why someone would be upset and there is no reason not to change that.

I used the term "ladies" yesterday while addressing two woman in an office, when I almost said you guys. I was impressed with how quick my mind adapted.

I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have cared either way. They were just two cool women in the end.

The company I work for just had a town hall yesterday, and the panel of all white executives made it a point to address "this time of reflection, as we are one year since the death of George Floyd" and then went on to talk about how they are donating money to black organizations and some diversity goals. Maybe this does something for some people, but I find it completely patronizing. Like, what does giving money to a local boys and girls club have anything to do with a police officer excessively kneeling on a black guy who was high on drugs and resisting arrest? It reeks of "we like black people, please don't come after us so we're going to throw some money at an unrelated issue that has some black people involved."

This stuff doesn't move the needle for me at all emotionally anyway, but if it did, I think I would find that stuff more upsetting than if the whole thing was just ignored.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

If these were organizations they truly wanted to support (1) they wouldn't have needed George Floyd to happen first & (2) they wouldn't make a big production out of it. These are just PR/litigation protection moves.

My job is flying the rainbow pride flag next to our state flag and American flag.

I just roll my eyes not because it bothers me or I'm anti gay.

It's just a superficial feel good decision made by some pandering executive.

Should just be official flags on those buildings. I don't want the confederate flag and I don't want the pride flag. Official state/US flags only.

Unfortunately, racial prejudice still persists in our society. And even if somewhere people are quite tolerant, still blacks and other previously oppressed groups of the population are simply looking for a catch out of habit.

I find it silly that our whole society is expected to conform to this one belief system that is not very logical.

You can get "used to" almost anything. It doesn't mean you should.

It's sensible to not want to go out of your way to insult people.

What isn't natural or reasonable is for everyone to be expected to robotically conform to this unnatural language and customs to try and cover everyone elses insecurities. That's most of what this is.

    Like "birthing person"

    I mean, what is that?

Where do these ideas come from?

This level of conformity and pandering will not make society better. All one has to do is look at the environment this stuff comes from to see that. The majority of the most angry, violent and unhappy people come from the same environment.
