Okay, what's your favorite Dave-era concert video. Obviously, this is a list of boot videos (hope I didn't miss any good ones) as the band have not been gracious enough to take our money yet and release a proper, professionally done one. I have not included the Oakland footage for the simple reason that no fan has a copy of the entire concert (but if you do, please send me a private message!!!).

Oh, and my vote has to go for the Montreal '84 show. It's extremely watchable (for an audience boot) and very exciting. Great show from beginning to end!

Are the Fresno 78 and Boston 79 ones full shows???

Of the ones I've seen, I guess I'd say Montreal 1984. Watched it just the other night, and it's a cool show. VH badly need to officially release a full show from the early era.

Yeah, I guess I couldn't consider Fresno and Boston full shows. They are large portions of the show. They both contain various songs and solos (but some in pieces), unlike Oakland which is just three videos (which may have been doctored up for all we know). Fresno is the better of the two, but they are both very rough (old 8-mm film footage). Still, amazing to see footage from this era. But I found them most exciting on that last Dave tour (from the footage I've seen).

Just hearing you say you watched the concert a few days ago wants to make me drag my tape out again, Glenn.

I've seen most of the US Fest video and I think it kicks ass.

Is the 79 one those Don Kirshner ones; Dance The Night Away, You're No Good and Bottoms Up? I've got those three tunes, and they begin with the band arriving in a limo to the gig, and end with them leaving. Those are cool clips.

I haven't seen them in a while, but '78 (to my recollection) was filmed from a 45-minute set and contains I think 25 or 30 minutes...probably eight songs with parts of the guitar solo and drum solo (which are relatively short). The picture is grainy and definitely has aged (and from the audience) but it's a good angle and you can hear everything as well. I know ON FIRE and I think ATOMIC PUNK are on there, as well as YOU REALLY GOT ME (and other songs). I also remember Dave makes a comment to the audience about their new album which will be out soon. I'm not sure, but they may go into a song from the then-in-progress VHII.

Boston is NOT the three pro-shot live videos (which are great too!). It's shot from the audience on 8-mm, but it's not as good an angle, and I think it's only 15 minutes, with lots of cuts. It's also amazing for its historical value, but it's no LWAN. I seem to remember Fresno being far more watchable.

I should upload some of that stuff to a VCD if I can get the equipment working. It's good stuff.

Damn, I'm gonna go dig it out tomorrow (before Christmas dinner and everything).

Does anyone know of any WACF tour footage (on boot) or FAIR WARNING? I've heard of a FAIR WARNING video boot, but I've yet to come across one yet. Now that would be something!

Thanks Rikk.

At the top, if you go into either the audio or video section, there's a great list of bootleg material in existance. The only thing they show from 1980 is a short clip from one show. Hard to believe there isn't more stuff in existance from then. Even the FW era is extremely minimal when it comes to video stuff.

Thanks for the link. Some good stuff there I should try trading for!

The only two I have are the US Fest, and the one from Argentina. They're both great, but I think I'd have to go with the US Fest. There's just something about that show.
"One of the reasons I left Sabbath was because Van Halen was blowing us off the stage every night. It was embarrassing." -Ozzy Osbourne

"When I first heard "Runnin' With The Devil" on the radio, I was stunned and found myself dizzy, walking through my high school hallways thinking, "What was THAT?!"
Eddie Van Halen was so innovative and kicked so much ass, and David Lee Roth was for a time indisputably the Greatest Man in America.
If aliens came down and challenged us to a Battle of the Bands to decide the fate of Planet Earth, I would feel very confident putting early Van Halen forward as our champion." -Tom Morello

"There is no heir to the throne of Eddie Van Halen. Nobody sits on that throne. Nobody takes that throne. Here's why it's different with Eddie: when a great guitar player passes, you just move on to another, right? But in this case, Eddie wasn't just a 'guitar player'. We're talking about a guy who changed culture and how we play guitar. He was like an alien coming in and fucking everything up so much that even the legends beforehand are like, 'Okay .. what is happening here? What sorcery is this?'" -Nuno Bettencourt

Overall, I think Largo '82 is the best. It's performances are much better than the ones on the US Fest vid, and the picture and sound quality top the audience-shot Montreal '82 and '84 shows. A good copy of the Largo show is a must-have for any serious VH fan.
