seems doubtful to me.....its over 25 yrs old and still has eddies cigarettes and puke?in it? and instead of paying 5000 or whatever for it why not just buy a new variac if your gonna hook it up.

It what Ed used in the early days to crank the wattage of his amps so he could get the tone that he got. Ruins the amps, but you get a good sound. They make things that do the same thing now but dont ruin your amp.

Craig from VHLive stated a good point. The owner says the Eddie used it on songs like Eruption, Aint Talkin Bout Love, and Mean Street. And that he got it from a direct trade with Ed himself. But then he goes on to say that it was only used on the first three albums. Now he either doesnt know much about VH or didnt pay close attention. Just thought it was interesting, especially considering the price the damn thing will go for.

You know, I was thinking that Edward still used the Variac whenever he used his Marshall for recording...even as recently as Balance. I doubt that this is actually Edward's Variac, as these things are fairly common to obtain.

I sent the seller an email asking how he can prove authenticity. We will see what he says. I checked his rating. Pretty good responses. Usually "career" ebayers dont want to take a chance on a bad rating and risk future deals. I'd be suprised if he didnt have a good answer.

And thanks Craig and Van Heine, I used your findings as reason to question.

Yeah, that's the most commone email question Im getting - about the stated
timeline like Im told Mean Street was on Fair Warning and not Women and
Children First. Im a guitar player first and a VH fan second so all
apologies. As careless as Ed is known to be he could probably care less. When
he let it go, it wasnt working. The wiper had to be bent back becaue of
cigarette butts jammed in the vent slots. Knob was cracked and other
problems. But it is cleaned up and will be verified working before it's
shipped to the new owner. Photographic evidence on this item as well as VHS
proof all over the place, as opposed to when I sold a pickup belonging to
him. <http://gar.knac.com/shep2.html> There were many pickups Ed had and has
still, but only one variac up to 1980 and although it may not sell first time
around it should generate enough interest to pursuede me not to list it a
second time. This thing could be worth $50,000. and I would fell like a fool
if it did believe me. Market forces what they are and the deep pockets of
loyal fans.
