I'm from Ireland and before I got on the net my only info on VH/DLR was thru' Magazines (obviously).
Now any time favourite VH album's were written about it was usually VH1 or else 1984,(W+CF the odd time).
But any time American bands were interviewed it was nearly always FW that was their fave.
And now since I'm on the net FW is nearly always the fans favourite.
Don't get me wrong, I think it's a brilliant album, But why the difference between Europe and the States. You guy"s are absolutely nuts for this album.

Achievements:
I think that it's almost too easy to say that VH 1 or 1984 are the best because they have sold so many copies are are the most recognized by rock fans in general. With that, I think a die hard fan is more inclined to feel an allegiance to an album that is both amazing, and a little less known by the general rock crowd. That album to me is Fair Warning. It completely stands on it's own as a piece of rock mastery; and yet I feel an affinity for it also because it's less popular historically.

IMO, Fair Warning is the best Van Halen record 'cause it's the most experimental. Aside from the usual Van Halen hard rockers' like "Unchained", "Mean Street", "Sinners Swing" and "So this is Love?" you have R & B funk inspired stuff like "Dirty Movies" and "Push Comes To Shove. " You even have tripped out keyboard tunes like "Sunday Afternoon In The Park" and "One Foot Out The Door". Unlike later albums, with Fair Warning they were able to experiment with different sounds without compromising that signature "down 'n dirty, raunchy" Van Halen sound. Another reason alot of us might like it is 'cause it was such a dark, moody record, something we didn't really see in other Van Halen records. It's hard to explain my fondness for Fair Warning. It's kinda like the "runt" Van Halen album. Not alot of people wanted it (poor initial sales) so we took it in nutured and loved it like as if to compensate for it's lack of popularity. And besides it had cool cover artwork.
That's why Fair Warning's my favorite Van Halen album.

I agree with the others...however, I think my reason for listing Fair Warning as my favorite album is because this was my first Van Halen album...we'll call it my sentimental favorite.
After getting into this album and seeing the tour, I went out and purchased the previous 3, and all future recordings (with DLR).
Guess you could say VH got me hook, line, and sinker.

That's perfectly true, and that goes for IRON
MAIDEN also.
Iron Maiden's highest selling album, and the one with the radio hit "Run To The Hills", is Number Of The Beast. However, you'll be hard-pressed to find a HARDCORE Maiden fan tell you that it's their favorite record. Most will name Powerslave, 7th son, or Piece of Mind. (For the record, mine is 7th son).

Emotion, depth, character, tension, agression, discusses taboo, not overproduced (raw), it's real.
Even down to the cover, this ablum is shrouded in mystery that unfolds to each personally upon years of listening and study.
It's multi-layered, and it delievers time after time after time.

I'm thinking here that some of you feel that I don't like FW, or that I can't believe why so many of you love it.
Nothing could be more further from the truth, the point I was trying to make was the difference between European and American VH fans.
I thought that maybe the reason all of you love the album was maybe it reflected your culture or your way of life. I just wanted to know what made this album click with so many American fans, what made all of you bond with it.
I was just making an observation on the love expressed for FW, and how it is almost exclusively felt in America.
I think it is great that a band with so many fans and huge selling albums can have have virtually all their fan-base united in their love for one particular album, which is not amongst their best-selling records, and one which the mainstream public are not too familiar with.
All I can really say is that I noticed how all of you LOVE this album, and I was just making a comment about that.
Just for the record my favourite VH album is not one of the two big ones (VH1/1984 - although I absolutely love them), it it Women and Children First - The perfect blend between Dazzling Musicianship and Outrageous Showmanship, all served up with a don't give a flying fuck attitude.
