I like it, the guitar solo is amazing. Good background vocals from Mike also.

I loved the song ever since I first heard it on the radio. Eddie's guitar sounded great.
Can you do 'it' till you're black and blue? You will have to find out for yourself. It's more fun that way. Remember the Heroes - 9/11/01

I dig this song, always have. OU812 may be far from a perfect record, but there are some DAMN good songs found on it, Cabo Wabo being my favorite and Black And Blue being right up there too....
I will always have a soft spot for the album OU812. Back in college in 1992, I lost my virginity while OU812 was playing on my CD player."Sorry about the mess..."<br /><br />~Han Solo Episode IV

Definitely my favourite tune off OU812 (Sucker a close 2nd). It's pretty cool how that was the first single of that album since it's probably the least poppy tune on the album.

It is definately the best song on the album. I also love A.F.U. and Cabo Wabo. Black and Blue was the first VH song that I learned to play the whole way through on guitar back in the summer of 1988.

Cool song... One of the best from OU812
“And what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever – that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both – that’s intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion.” - David Lee Roth

Great song. After relasing WCTBL as a single from 5150, having Black and Blue as the first single from OU812 was incredible. It will always remind me of the summer of 1988. Also, got a quality BJ from my girlfriend in the car while this song was on ........ah memories

Best song off of OU812, hands down.
Q: Recording the album took so long your Australian tour last year was cancelled. What was it like in the studio? There's a history of tension between you and Eddie Van Halen...
DLR: It was like a stand off in a Chuck Norris movie. We each had the laser dot on everybody's forehead waiting for the other guy to blink. Except for Wolfie, he had a Super Soaker ...

wip5150,
You beat me to the point about this song being a complete 180 from the previous album's trailer. I was 16 when it first hit radio, and my very first thought after my very first listen was: "Thank God the band didn't trailer another 'Why Can't This Be Love' for the new record...".
I also remember watching closely its progress as a single on the Billboard chart and feeling a measure of satisfaction that it cracked the Top 40 (peaked at #34). At the time I hoped that its success despite its relative incompatibility with traditional Top 40 radio would spark the band's eventual shift back toward the raw energy of the Dave-era catalog.
Instead, subsequent albums produced garbage like "Right Here, Right Now", "Top Of The World" and the godawful "Can't Stop Loving You" (all of which make "Why Can't This Be Love?" look decent (barely)). These and other (45) releases look like nothing more than WB boardroom-written tunes intent on placating the record company for the sake of Top 40 sales sensibilities. To this day I can't understand why one of the three greatest guitar players of all time lowered himself to write any of this sh*t...
"Black And Blue" was the last TOUGH VH single released by the band (unless "Don't Tell Me" was a 45 release - I can't remember...). For that it's worth a considerable footnote in the band's catalog.
The Real Deal
PS: I do love plenty of other tunes on all of the Van Hagar albums. It's just a shame I have to program the corporate trash out of my CD player...<a href="http://www.the-real-deal.com/index.htm" target="_blank">The Real Deal</a> does old VH better than any other band in the SF Bay Area. Hearing is believing...
