...dick dale is that surf guitar dude (yes, there was surf guitar before satch) who was real big in the sixties. a lot of eddie's solos end with that fast up and down picking (sixteenth notes or somethin') which is what dale is all about. an influence on the master perhaps?

Dude, I been thinking that for a few years now. I never hear anyone else mention it so its cool to finally run into someone who thinks it possible.
I know EVH had many influences, one of them being surf guitar.
I believe when he finally picked up a guitar at age 12 he said that the first song he ever learned & mastered was "Walk Don't Run" by The Ventures.
Now The Ventures are like the biggest selling instrumental surf group of all time! So if he was into them, I am pretty sure he knew about Dick Dale. Dick was already establishing himself as the King of Surf Guitar. He pretty much wrote the book. I think of Dick Dale as a surf shredder. No doubt about it, that man can thrash & shred big time.. Dick had MAJOR TONE as well. Still does too. And those fast runs you speak of had to come across Ed's ears at some point.

Dick Dale is the SHIT! I wish he would come to Philly on one of his off the wall tours. He goes through like 2-3 picks for every song. His string combination is whacky too. In 98 when VH was on a live chat I asked about Dick Dale several times and never got any sort of response. Go figure...

How about Dick Dale, Link Wray and Eddie on some sort of a G3 surf, powerchord shred tour! That would definately rock!
