Supergroup Planet Us Back In Studio Working On Debut Album

The new year means that Journey guitarist Neal Schon has returned to the studio--but not with Journey. Schon is in the midst of recording his first album with Planet Us, the San Francisco Bay Area supergroup that also includes Sammy Hagar, Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony, and Journey drummer Dean Castronovo. The group members started working on the album in December, and have returned to the studio after a holiday break to spend time with their families.

Schon tells LAUNCH that if he has his way, we'll be hearing the results very soon: "We'll finish it in January, I think. Everybody works very fast. The first time we got together we had written a couple of tunes and we arranged them and recorded them in one day, and they turned out great. So I know we can work very fast as long as the material is there."

However, Schon offers no timetable for an album release or tour from Planet Us, which is not signed to a label. Journey, meanwhile, recently self-released a new EP, Red 13.

Geez. Assuming that the record is out by late spring it looks like we'll have some new interesting music very soon. Perhaps they're working quickly because of Mike's and possibly Sammy's upcomming unannouced VH commitments.

After seeing those 4 guys perform live (of course not all together), I'm really looking forward to their album. Rock and roll lives on!

I for one am really look forward to this album. Neal Schon and Sammy have worked together in the past(ala HSAS in 1984)and Mikey and Sammy have always complimented each other pretty good. Maybe after jamming for awhile in the studio it will influence Mikey to give Eddie a kickstart in the ass to get back to 5150.

A lot of people didn't seem to much care for 'Vertigo', but I really liked it. The song is kind of Sabbath meets Zeppelin. In my book, that's a GOOD thing.

    Raldo,

When you say "of course not all together", you mean in-person, right? I've got the video (TV recorded, of course) of their Cal Music Awards appearance last May, where they perform both existing tunes.

BTW, I'm guessing by virtue of the article above that Sammy's talk of a Floyd-esque concept album is not going to emerge in the Planet US debut release. Why would they sprint through the process (as Schon is suggesting) if they were crafting a magnum opus like the one Sammy has spoken of in interviews during 2002?

Either way, if anything on the PU debut is as good as "State Of Grace", I'll be one happy fan.

"Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that."

"This is a lttle prayer dedicated to the separation of church and state. I guess if they are going to force those kids to pray in schools they might as well have a nice prayer like this: Our Father who art in heaven, and to the republic for which it stands, thy kingdom come, one nation indivisible as in heaven, give us this day as we forgive those who so proudly we hail. Crown thy good into temptation but deliver us from the twilight's last gleaming. Amen and Awomen. ."

Can't wait to hear this. I'm assuming this is the first time Mikey has done anything outside of Van Halen, am I right? Should be interesting!
