I spoke with the booking rep from America West Arena here in Phoenix, inquiring about a possible Van Halen show, not expecting to get much info. I asked him if Van Halen was possibly to be booked at AWA or anywhere else locally, and he said, "Oh, no, I seriously doubt it". After such a response, I asked him point blank if he had any inside info and he told me he had spoken to Van Halen's booking agent about two weeks ago and the agent told him nothing was happening.

Take it for what it's worth; I'm wondering if the Florida tentative booking was just a CYA for VH in case a tour does get going.

I do find it a bit curious that Van Halen's booking agent is even talking to agents at an Arena to begin with. Why would he call just to say that nothing was happening? I'm not doubting you at all VHDOF, just asking myself question aloud.

    Hang On! Some updates...

I just spoke with a rep at Bank One Ballpark (BOB) and they tell me that something is in the works!!!!!

    Yeah!!!!!

I also spoke with the booking rep at Desert Sky Pavillion (capacity 20,000) and he had not heard anything, although he was completely in tune to the situation, saying that until DLR/a new album is confirmed, he doesn't expect to hear anything. I asked his professional opinion about the kind of business the VH/DLR reunion might do, and he felt they could sell out Desert Sky by themselves, but would need at least one other major act to sell out BOB (40,000).

It's kind of funky out here, we have what we call the 'Maricopa County stadium district' that gets involved with bookings of any major events at AWA, BOB, etc. The person from BOB I spoke to said that discussions have taken place for a concert at BOB, but because of the lead time needed to prepare the turf for the D-backs, it would have to take place by the start of spring training (beginning of March), so it may be switched to AWA.

So, I'm now getting conflicting information, I'll update as necessary.

I think VH's tour managers told the venues to leave dates open for them, not thinking that we'd find out. Then, we called and we found out about the plans. Then VH called their tour managers, knowing the situation, and told them to call the venues all back so things would stay a secret. This is weird indeed.

Well, I live in Philly, and ran into a man who works for the company/agency that books all the shows in the NJ/Philly area. I am doing some advanced training for my job, and not knowing his profession when we started talking, he spoke of knowing Pat Metheny (sp?) and seeing him in Boston. He went on about his experiences, and I said hey what do you think about Dave and VH together again? He said he heard Dave's voice was shot, and that they tried to make it work and couldn't. Further, I still didn't know his position in the music/booking business at this time. I saw him 10 days later in the office, and I asked him how he heard this and he told me his job. Again I brought up VH stating I was a big fan, and again he said Dave's voice was shot. This is just my 2 cents worth. Take it for what you will. I know that many, many Linkers saw Dave on his last tour and said he was very good. I hope this guy is wrong, but I will tell you that he in his corporation book ALL the talent for the Philly and a lot of NJ. Well Happy holidays. Take care

Thanks Hal. I know this topic has been beaten to death here over the past year. That's why I never brought this up before. It only happened 2-3 weeks ago. Anyway....the waiting continues.

Something is going on!! What... I am still not sure, Camp VH probally didnt think we the VH NUT BASE would go to these extremes to get news. Now they are having to tell everyone that they have spoken with to keep a lid on things.

VH its time to say something, you cant keep it quiet any longer.

    The SAGA continues.

I think the perception Daves voice is shot is based on the 96 fiasco - a lot of people wernt impressed with what they heard. most people who got some exposure (either live or via bootlegs) of the latter part of his 99 tour seem to agree he sounds fine. He's obviously let it go, but worked hard to bring it back IMHO

Discussion of a VAN HALEN concert? You know I was assuming the concert would be held at Desert Sky (I honestly think AWA might be too small), but now, BOB would be the perfect place...however, they have never had a concert there before, have they?....maybe even Sun Devil Stadium.

Does anyone here in Phoenix know anyone at Evening Star Productions?

Better yet, all VHLinkers should contact anyone they know in a larger concert venue and do some snooping. There's gotta me more leaks out there.

New Year's Evil - 1999, Ozzy, Pantera, et al, was held at BOB. I didn't attend, but heard the sound was good and it wasn't a bad place to see a concert.

I did also speak with 'Select Artists Associates' which is a booking agency out of Scottsdale that handles all bookings at BOB and also arranges celebrity promotional events in zonie land. The person I spoke with was not aware of any dealing with Van Halen.

However, at this point, I think it is obvious something is going on. First, the place in FL and my own conversations with venues here in AZ. Why would people at a new venue start talking about a Van Halen concert if there wasn't at least a shred of information that it might be happening? It doesn't make sense. I know that the venue has issued an official press release to the contrary, but there has to be a reason why people who are employed by the venue started 'singing'.

The representative I spoke with from BOB was so matter-of-fact about discussions of a VH concert that it completely threw me for a loop during our conversation. This person at one point actually said, "Are you still there?".

So, anyway, the waiting game continues. As DLR said, "You publicize the &*^% out of we're not talking".

All of these stadium bookings posts are a waste of our time. Those in the know are resting easy and booking their flights and hotels for early May 2001, Pasadena California.

Does anybody know if Phil Spector ever produced a Steely Dan record?
